Joe Tsai: The Architect of Alibaba’s Success

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Joe Tsai moved with his family during the Chinese Civil War. He attended Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, excelling in sports, and later earned degrees in economics and East Asian studies from Yale University.

Initially starting in law, Tsai shifted to business, marking the beginning of his influential career.

In 1999, Tsai co-founded Alibaba, playing a crucial role as executive vice chairman and COO. 

He helped shape Alibaba’s legal and financial structures and is now the chairman and the second-largest individual shareholder.

Beyond Alibaba, Tsai has expanded into sports ownership, including the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty through his company, J Tsai Sports.

Tsai is committed to philanthropy, supporting his alma maters—Lawrenceville School and Yale University—as well as healthcare and BIPOC causes.
