EU Investigating Disinformation on Facebook and Instagram Ahead of Election

The European Commission is investigating Meta Platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, for possible violations of EU online content regulations

Concerns have intensified about misinformation from internal and external sources, with Russia, China, and Iran identified as potential culprits.

The EU is particularly vigilant about deceitful activities aimed at influencing voters.

The investigation is grounded in the Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires large digital companies to actively combat illegal and harmful content.

Violations can lead to fines up to 6% of a company’s annual global revenue.

EU’s digital leader, has criticized Meta's moderation methods for their lack of transparency and inefficacy in dealing with misleading content.

Meta claims to have implemented robust measures to identify and address threats on its platforms, with more than 250 million monthly active users in the EU.

Meta has been given five working days to inform the EU of the corrective actions taken in response to the Commission’s concerns.

The outcome of the investigation could significantly impact Meta’s operations in the EU and shape future regulations targeting false advertising and online misinformation.
