WhatsApp will soon enable local chat transfers on Android

A recent revelation from WABetaInfo claims that users will be able to move WhatsApp data between Android devices without the use of Google Drive thanks to the upcoming version of the app. In other words, using a local network will soon be possible for WhatsApp chat transfers.

According to reports, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is developing a new feature dubbed “Chat Transfer” that will let users transfer data from one Android device to another via a local network.

As the software is still being developed, the new feature will be added in a later update, according to WABetaInfo. By simply scanning the QR code, the user will be able to move their conversation history to a new smartphone with this feature.

As data is typically sent over a local network rather than being downloaded from a cloud service, this future feature in WhatsApp will not only make the process of transferring chats simpler but also substantially faster than it is now. Currently, under development, the additional features may soon be made accessible to beta testers.

The new feature ought to be added to WhatsApp’s stable version after the company has finished testing it. The deployment date, however, is not known with any certainty.

Switching between the two most widely used smartphone platforms has become considerably simpler ever since WhatsApp started enabling users to transfer their chat backups from Android to iOS and vice versa.

The App has introduced proxy support for its users worldwide, including the millions of individuals in Iran and other countries who continue to be deprived of the freedom to communicate in private and openly. By selecting a proxy, they can connect to WhatsApp using servers set up by volunteers and groups working to support free communication all over the world.

Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp noted, “We are making it easier for anyone to connect to WhatsApp using a proxy. So when a connection to WhatsApp is blocked, people have the power to restore access.”

The App announced the proxy support noting,” We’re mindful that just as we’ve celebrated the start of 2023 through private texts or calls, there are many people who continue to be denied the ability to reach their loved ones because of internet shutdowns.

To help, today we’re launching proxy support for WhatsApp users all over the world. What this means is we’re putting the power into people’s hands to maintain access to WhatsApp if their connection is blocked or disrupted.”

According to WhatsApp, using a proxy connection will provide the same level of security and privacy that the social media site already provides. End-to-end encryption will still be used to safeguard users’ private messages, it claims.

WhatsApp rolls out picture-in-picture mode on iOS beta

For iOS beta users, Meta-owned WhatsApp is launching a brand-new picture-in-picture mode for video chatting. Users would be able to open and access other apps while on a WhatsApp video chat with the new feature. Especially, the latest feature option is only available to a limited number of iOS beta testers.

As per WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has made the new Picture-in-Picture feature available to certain beta iOS beta testers who already have installed the new WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.24.0.79 upgrade. More users will be able to use the feature in the following days.

What exactly is WhatsApp picture-in-picture mode?

As shown in the screenshot of the new feature launched by WABetaInfo, the latest picture-in-picture mode will enable the users to carry out multiple tasks on the phone while on a WhatsApp video chat. Noticeably, if a user leaves the WhatsApp app during a video call, the picture-in-picture view will appear on the main window immediately.

This allows iPhone users to access other apps without needing to close the video call window or pause their camera. Users will be able to switch off or momentarily deactivate the video call view as needed.

Besides that, as of now, the picture-in-picture mode is available on iOS 16.1 and later, so it is possible that it will be one of the features supported by the upgrade that carries official support for iOS 16. WhatsApp is also operating to add support for iOS 15 devices.

Importantly, Android users can already use the picture-in-picture mode for video chatting. In addition, WhatsApp allows both Android and iOS users to enable picture-in-picture mode when viewing shared video files on the app.

To enable picture-in-picture mode, navigate to your device’s Settings> Apps and Notifications> WhatsApp> Advanced Picture-in-picture.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is testing another update that re-designs and expands the alternatives mostly under the disappearing messages quick access button. Besides that, the Meta-owned instant messenger platform has updated and released eight emojis and it will add 21 further new emojis to improve users’ messaging experiences. The emoticon update is now available in the most recent beta Build on the Play Store.

WhatsApp has revealed the release of a business directory feature that supports in-app transactions. Users can use this feature to find nearby businesses. Users can look up the business by categories including banking, dining, and travel.

After a brief test in So Paulo, Brazil, last year, WhatsApp decided to officially launch the service. In Brazil, the feature is only accessible through Android, however, it is accessible through both Android and iOS in the other four countries.

At a meeting in Brazil devoted to WhatsApp, the company said that the “business search” tool will help people find contacts for businesses more quickly. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, noted, “We want to make it easier for people to get more done on WhatsApp.

Part of that is building better ways to engage with businesses. The ultimate goal here is to make it so you can find, message, and buy from a business all in the same WhatsApp chat.” To start a conversation with a business on Whatsapp, users previously had to enter a mobile number to their phone contacts or follow a link on a different site.

The feature’s release coincides with WhatsApp’s increased marketing of itself as a platform for users to contact businesses in addition to family and friends. According to Meta, more than 175 million users use WhatsApp to communicate with business accounts daily as of October 2020.

Other e-commerce-related features have also been introduced to the service, such as support for in-app shopping.. According to a press statement from WhatsApp, the merchant payments functionality is now being tested in Brazil “with multiple payment partners.”

The business-oriented features of WhatsApp are noteworthy since they represent one of the few means the platform is monetized using the WhatsApp Business API. It doesn’t similarly display ads as Instagram and Facebook, two of Meta’s other top services, do. However, a Meta executive told Reuters a year ago that WhatsApp’s business model “in some form or another” is likely to include adverts in the future.

With the debut of person-to-person payments in 2020, Meta recently announced WhatsApp’s “first-ever end-to-end shopping experience” in India with JioMart earlier this year.  However, the expansion in Brazil has been more delayed. The payments function of WhatsApp was shut down by Brazil’s national bank in 2020, not long after it was introduced.

The Financial Times reported in April of this year that Meta was having trouble obtaining payment providers for its payment-to-merchant service.

Over 2 billion people use WhatsApp worldwide. According to the company’s quarterly earnings, which were cited by TechCrunch last month, the click-to-WhatsApp ad business had increased revenue by 80% year over year and was on course to reach $1.5 billion annually.

Recently, Meta reported its first-ever yearly revenue drop and laid off over 11,000 employees.

The corporation has officially started to introduce new group functionalities for desktop users. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is launching a new feature that will enable some beta testers on Desktop beta to view profile photos inside of group chats.

For quite some time, the new WhatsApp feature, which permits PC users to view profile photos within group chats, has been in the works, and statements about the feature have indeed been sighted in previous beta versions.

According to the report’s screenshot, the feature will also allow you to view an image of the member in the group chat screen just beside their name. As of now, the app only displays the names of the members.

To determine whether you have gotten the latest feature, you just have to open a group chat. As previously stated, the feature is currently only available to beta users. However, the company is expected to roll out the feature in a public upcoming update.

WhatsApp officially unveiled a companion mode for smartphone users having Android in the form of a beta update. According to a report by WABetaInfo, a few fortunate beta testers on the Android system are now able to use the WhatsApp companion mode which was highly awaited.

The feature was previously available to just a few Android-based tablet users last month, and it is now accessible to mobile phone users as well. You could use a single WhatsApp account on some other smartphone with the help of the new companion mode.

However, my updates and bugs are still going on. Users will experience a series a changes.

WhatsApp is yet to fix two bugs disclosed by WABetaInfo. A tweet quoted, “Some users are experiencing crashes when downloading videos after installing the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android. In addition, WhatsApp may continuously play a conversation tone when sending a message.”

WhatsApp has been working on Communities, a significant update to how users will be able to interact on WhatsApp in groups that are important to them.

Communities such as neighbourhoods, school parents, and workplaces can now connect multiple groups under one umbrella to arrange group chats on WhatsApp.

To get started, Android phone users can click on the latest communities tab located at the top of their chats and iOS users can click on the bottom.

They will now be able to create new Communities from scratch or join existing ones.

Users can effortlessly switch among available groups once in a community to get the information they need, when they need it, and administrators can send important updates to all the members of the Community.

WhatsApp Communities aims to raise the bar for how organisations communicate by providing a level of security and privacy which is not found anywhere else.

Other features such as in-chat polls, 32-person video calling, and groups with up to 1,024 participants can be used in any group but will be especially useful in Communities.

The company has been collaborating with about 50 organizations in 15 countries to develop Communities to cater to their needs, and the feedback so far indicates that these software inventions are assisting groups like these in better organising and achieving their goals.
