The App Store has become flooded with third-party apps identifying themselves as “ChatGPT” or “AI chatbot” as customer demand for AI chatbots increased.

Despite the fact that many of these were really “fleece are,” aiming to deceive users into paying for pricey memberships to access their AI, a collection of top applications nevertheless managed to generate millions in revenue from users.

It might have been more difficult for an official ChatGPT app to gain popularity given the competitive environment among AI chatbots. In actuality, though, such was not the situation.

The majority of its competitors, including other well-known AI and chatbot apps as well as Microsoft’s Bing and Edge apps, which provided some of the first important third-party integrations of OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology, were outperformed by the ChatGPT app from OpenAI.

Though Bing and Microsoft Edge undoubtedly benefited from ChatGPT’s initial popularity, they saw 340,000 and 335,000 downloads on iOS and Android, respectively, in their best five-day periods in February. However, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app easily outperformed them, producing 480,000 installs in the initial five days of its United States launch, when the app was iOS-only

The app outperformed other top AI chatbot apps in the U.S., many of which had generic names to take advantage of consumer searches for terms like “AI” and “chatbot” on the App Store, according to Data.ai’s data. When compared to other apps’ best five-day periods throughout the App Store and Google Play in 2023, OpenAI’s ChatGPT came in at number five in terms of downloads.

According to the data, “Chat with Ask AI,” the sole app that outperformed it, got 590,000 installs between April 4 and 8, 2023, as opposed to ChatGPT’s 480,000 downloads between May 18 and 22. Even though it has only been launched for a week, ChatGPT is already among the top five AI chatbot apps in terms of downloads in May 2023 in the United States.

Additionally, Windows 11 will receive a few smaller changes, such as Bluetooth LE support, which enables you to listen to high-quality audio without compromising the battery life of your device. Along with native RGB controls in Windows 11, Microsoft is also introducing support for 10 new dialects and languages in live captions, a feature that instantly transcribes audio.

Regarding its 365 Copilot, Microsoft has some significant news to announce: the inclusion of plug-ins. Three different categories of plug-ins, such as Teams messaging extensions, Power Platform connectors, and products utilizing ChatGPT technology, will now be supported by the AI assistant.

You’ll also get access to dozens of third-party plug-ins, including those made by Atlassian and Adobe. Additionally, Microsoft claims that it will apply the same standard for all Copilot and Bing Chat plug-ins that OpenAI does for ChatGPT.

This makes it possible to utilize the same plug-ins throughout all three AI-powered applications, and it also makes it simpler for developers to make them.

Microsoft will make 365 Copilot available on Edge. The feature, which will be located in the browser’s sidebar, may be used to work on projects in Microsoft 365 products like Outlook, Word, Excel, and others by utilizing the information on the website you’re currently visiting.

By integrating with GitHub Copilot, Windows Terminal will gain an AI-powered chatbot. GitHub Copilot users can now interact with the chatbot directly from the Terminal to do a variety of tasks, obtain code advice, and describe errors. Additionally, Microsoft claims to be looking towards integrating the GitHub Copilot with other development tools, such as WinDBG.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida requested cooperation towards a secure, cross-border flow of data and pledged financial support to such an effort in order to ensure that AI research is human-centric and reliable.

The plea for stronger regulation is consistent with those made by business and political leaders around the world after OpenAI’s ChatGPT sparked a race for businesses to build the technology more swiftly.

It’s feared that if the developments — which can create writing that is authoritative and human-sounding and make images and videos — go unchecked, they will become a potent instrument for deception and political upheaval. This week, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and the privacy leader of International Business Machines urged US senators to tighten AI regulations.

World Health Organisation warned this week in a statement that implementing AI too soon carried the danger of causing medical blunders, which might damage people’s confidence in the technology and impede its adoption.

Altman and other individuals have been called to the UK by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in order to develop a strategy to address both the hazards and advantages of AI.

The European Union is moving towards regulating AI tools by requiring businesses to ensure that users are aware when they are dealing with AI and by outlawing its use for real-time identification of individuals in public. According to Altman, establishing a new regulatory body would help the US preserve its dominance in the industry.

In contrast to strong regulatory legislation like those in the EU, the Japanese government frequently favors regulating AI under laxer guidelines.

Hiroki Habuka, the senior associate at the Wadhwani Centre for AI and Advanced Technologies, said that if there is a serious issue, the government should eventually use hard legislation to enforce its policies. But if the law is very specific, it won’t be able to keep up with technological advancements.

It will be difficult to establish an international standard for generative AI regulation at this time since different values are considered appropriate in society in each of the G7 nations, he said.

However, they lack the capability for general intelligence, which encompasses adaptability, abstract reasoning, and consciousness. AI is designed to augment human capabilities rather than replace them, offering valuable tools for various industries.

AI systems have inherent limitations that prevent them from taking over the world. One major constraint is that artificial intelligence algorithms are created and trained by humans, and their behavior is dictated by the data they are exposed to. They are essential tools created to assist humans in solving complex problems, relying on human oversight and intervention.

Furthermore, AI lacks certain human traits like emotions, empathy, and intuition, which are crucial for understanding complex social dynamics and making ethical judgments. Without these qualities, artificial intelligence systems are limited in their ability to fully comprehend and respond to the complexities of the real world.

To address concerns related to AI’s potential misuse, the development and deployment of AI systems are governed by ethical frameworks and regulations. Organizations and researchers are increasingly emphasizing the importance of responsible AI practices.

Initiatives such as explainable AI, fairness in algorithms, and transparency are being promoted to ensure AI systems operate in a trustworthy manner. Additionally, policymakers and experts are working towards establishing legal frameworks that address AI’s impact on society.

Regulations are being implemented to safeguard privacy, prevent discrimination, and maintain human control over critical decisions. These measures aim to ensure that artificial intelligence technologies are developed and used for the benefit of humanity, with human values and ethics at their core.

Fears of a takeover are largely rooted in science fiction rather than reality. While the technology has demonstrated remarkable capabilities in specific domains, it lacks the fundamental qualities required for world domination.

The implementation of ethical safeguards and the focus on responsible artificial intelligence development will continue to ensure that AI remains a valuable tool in our hands, rather than a threat to humanity.
