Due to security concerns, New Zealand announced on Friday that it would restrict the usage of the video-sharing platform TikTok on devices connected to the nation’s parliamentary network. With this decision, New Zealand joined a growing list of countries that have restricted TikTok on devices used by the government.

Global worries have grown over the possibility that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent business, could give the Chinese government access to users’ contact information and location information.

The seriousness of those worries was highlighted earlier in the week when the Biden administration insisted that TikTok’s Chinese owners sell their holdings or risk having the app banned in the United States. By the end of March, all devices in New Zealand with network connectivity to the parliament will be prohibited from using TikTok.

Rafael Gonzalez-Montero, the chief executive of the Parliamentary Service, explained in an email to Reuters that the choice was made following consultations with cybersecurity professionals, talks within the government, and consultations with other nations. He stated, “Based on this information, the Service has determined that the risks are not acceptable in the current New Zealand Parliamentary environment.”

Bing Search Engine Surpasses 100 Million Daily Active Users

This week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s pursuit of Google hit a new high when the company revealed that the number of daily active users of its AI-powered Bing search engine had exceeded 100 million.

Bing’s statistics were revealed in a blog post on Wednesday by Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president, and chief consumer marketing officer at Microsoft. Notably, Mehdi noted that a third of Bing’s active users are brand-new to Bing. Bing preview is a constrained early-bird form of its upcoming search engine.

The company viewed this as “validation” of its belief that search needs to be reinvented and evidence of the attraction of providing search, responses, chat, and creativity all in one spot.

Even though Google, which has over 1 billion users on a daily basis, is still the market leader, this is a promising start for Microsoft. Mehdi wrote in the blog, “This is a surprisingly notable figure, and yet we are fully aware we remain a small, low, single-digit share player. that said, it feels good to be at the dance!” The Microsoft executive continued by claiming that users were using Bing more frequently, though he withheld precise figures.

Taiwan’s TSMC to recruit 6,000 engineers in 2023

TSMC is trying to capitalize on the current trend of technical job cuts, which have resulted in the dismissals of several thousand engineers.

“To support the company’s business growth and technology development, TSMC is planning to recruit more than 6,000 new employees in Taiwan including engineers and production line operators in Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung in 2023,” the chip biz told The Register.
