However, in February 2019, when evidence from the antitrust trial was made public on Tuesday, Google secretly issued a “Code Yellow” due to worries that the business could miss its quarterly targets for search revenue.

Documents state that during the seven-week crisis, engineers from Google’s search as well as Chrome browser divisions were transferred to investigate the reason behind the slowdown in user inquiries.

Justice Division Ben Gomes, a previously employed Google employee, was contacted by the firm to defend itself and demonstrate the progress it has achieved in search, especially in the mobile space. On interrogation, however, attorney David Dahlquist of the Justice Department brought to light the conflicts that existed between Gomes’ search department and its marketing competitors.

The goal of the interrogation was to disprove Google’s claims that its search team only concentrates on enhancing user experience and is occasionally drawn into the advertising space, where the Department of Justice claims Google has been able to hike prices without facing opposition.

In its eighth week of trial, the fundamental question is whether Google used billions of dollars to suppress competition and retain its monopoly over internet search, in violation of the law.

Google refuted the notion that the firm’s advertising revenue targets had an impact on results from searches and innovation in a statement.

“The organic results you see in search are not affected by our ads systems or by the ads we show for a query,” said Peter Schottenfels, a Google spokesperson.

Google claims that its improved offering has allowed them to grab almost 90 percent of the search engine market, and that the general public has benefited from its innovations in internet search. However, emails shown in court on Tuesday indicated that several important members of the search team at the business expressed worry about Google prioritising revenue above innovation.

Google will blur explicit images in search by default

In the following months, Search engine giant, Google, will introduce a brand new SafeSearch blurring functionality available by default to all consumers.

The filter is designed to safeguard individuals as well as their households from accidentally having to experience explicit images and videos on Search. The search engine giant says it’s launching the function on 7 February to commemorate Safer Internet Day.

A new setting, rolling out “in the coming months,” “will blur explicit imagery if it appears in Search results when SafeSearch filtering isn’t turned on,” writes Google’s Jen Fitzpatrick, senior vice president of Core Systems & Experiences. “This setting will be the new default for people who don’t already have the SafeSearch filter turned on, with the option to adjust settings at any time.”

The option will shortly become the latest default for users who are not yet using the SafeSearch filter enabled. As a result, if explicit imagery shows up on results pages, Google will distort it.

Explicit sexual content such as violence, pornography, and gore are examples of explicit results. Google mentions that users can change the configuration at any moment. Previous to this development, the filter had already been enabled by default for registered members under the age of 18.

When the setting would become the default, Google would then inform you that SafeSearch blurring has been enabled. If users get brought near a graphic image, users can view it by simply clicking the “view image” button.

Alternatively, you can change the filter as well as turn it off entirely by selecting the “manage setting” toggle. Users can, for instance, choose the “filter” option to assist in filtering explicit pictures, text, & links.

Alternatively, you can select “off,” which also means you’ll see all useful results for your request, regardless of whether they’re explicit.

It is important to note that SafeSearch just works on results from Google searches and will not restrict explicit content found on other browsers or webpages that you visit directly. Google as well observes that, even though SafeSearch isn’t perfect, it does help extract explicit material in Google’s search results for all of your inquiries, including pictures, videos, as well as websites.

Convera Corporation was the result of a merger that took place between Intel’s Interactive Services division and Excalibur Technologies Corporation in the year 2000. The latter has been in the search engine industry for a longer time, and this experience was put to good use for Convera Corporation. On the other hand, Intel’s Interactive division’s expertise was also a boon for the company. Convera bagged Intel’s contract with the National Baseball Association for the distribution of the NBA content in the first year of its inception.

With the recent launch of iOS14 and iPadOS14, users have noticed that the queries show search results without Google Search. Many search marketing experts also noticed that the activity of Applebot has increased ridiculously in recent weeks. Applebot is iPhone’s web crawler and the increased rate of crawling means that it is trying to gather more information from the internet. In the new iOS14, Apple’s home screen shows a list of search suggestions generated by Apple’s search engine and not Google. The search result is based on AI thus showing results according to the common queries.

Will apple become a strong competition? 

Standing up to Google as a strong rival could take years, but currently, Apple has shown excellent developments with the alternative search engine. Apple has both a good team of engineers and capital to sign up for a long-term investment. Since the beginning, Apple has focused more on developing every bit of its product in-house starting from the smartphones to the watches. It wants to create a very strong integration between the hardware and the software components. But, for a long time, Apple was stuck with Google’s search engine. Though Apple still has the option to choose between keeping Google Search as the default search engine or become its rival, the stakes are high for the latter option.

Sridhar Ramaswamy, Google’s former head of advertising, said that to build a search engine it should have 20bn-50bn pages in its active index. Along with this, the system has to rank the pages within milliseconds when the user runs a query. It will be extremely difficult for Apple to create a search engine as big as Google but it is not impossible.

Facing the Failure

Right after acquiring his bachelor’s degree, Weinberg launched a company called Learnection. It was a software company that was built to enhance social networking and increase the interaction of parents with students and school as well. He invested all the money he raised from his family and friends and ended up nowhere. He realized that he made two major mistakes, one he hired his friends who weren’t suitable for the job and underpaid them, and second, that he worked day and night on a project that had zero market demand.

The Idea of DuckDuckGo

The most fascinating quality of Weinberg is that he did a lot of experimenting irrespective of the success of his products. One day, Weinberg found more than 10,000 searches a day for the pages, he created while trying things out. He completely forgot about these websites and noticed that though he wasn’t up to something solid, an audience has already been created.

He was intrigued by the number of searches per day, especially on something which had zero product development. So, Weinberg wanted to come up with something where he will dedicate most of his time to driving traffic and increasing users, and hence, searches and very little to the product development.

So, on 25th September 2008, Weinberg launched DuckDuckGo without any intentions to give competition to Google. He founded the platform only because he thought the users would like it better!

Success of DuckDuckGo

The company was founded in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and it was self-funded by Weinberg at the beginning. Since Weinberg didn’t create DuckDuckGo, thinking he would do business at least for some decades, but just as a modified version of Google search engine with features that would attract more users. The best part of the business didn’t arrive in the first couple of years, as he got involved more with his family and giving little time to his newly launched product.

But, Weinberg realized DuckDuckGo kicked off the ground quite hard, and it is having a vast potential to grow. He started focusing on the work, and at the end of 2011, the company raised $3 million from Union Square Ventures. The next year, the company recorded 1.5 million searches per day, and the number of visits per day escalated from 39,000 in 2010 to more or less 1,400,000 in 2012.

In 2014, Mozilla added this search engine to Firefox 33.1, and in July 2016, the company started a joint venture with Yahoo! Recently, Google has announced that DuckDuckGo has been added to its search engine in Chrome 73.

Strategies

Since Weinberg’s primary focus was on the interest of the people, and on how to attract more users, he made privacy modifications in DuckDuckGo. Unlike Google, DuckDuckGo avoids the feature of the filter bubble and doesn’t track the search history of the user.
