The Samsung Galaxy S22 series, which includes the South Korean company’s most recent flagship smartphones, was unveiled on Tuesday (February 9) at the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event. Samsung has launched three new S-series smartphones, as it did last year, and this year’s lineup includes the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. The smartphones are outfitted with the most recent high-end smartphone chipsets and AMOLED displays with 120Hz refresh rates. Samsung has increased the charging speed for its Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra models this year, now offering 45W wired charging. On the Galaxy S22 series, the company also boasts advanced “Nightography” low light photography improvements.
There is no difference between the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ camera setups, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s first S-series smartphone to ship with an S Pen built into the phone’s chassis – it is also the first phone from Samsung since the Galaxy Note 20.
Samsung Galaxy S22: Specifications
It runs Android 12 over One UI 4.1. The smartphone has a 6.1-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection and an Armor Aluminium chassis. In addition to the Eye Comfort Shield for reducing blue light, the display features an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate that can be slowed down to 10Hz. An octa-core 4nm SoC with 8GB of RAM is powering the Samsung Galaxy S22.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 houses three rear cameras, including a single dual-pixel sensor with a 50-megapixel resolution and an f/1.8 aperture lens and autofocus; a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture lens and a 120-degree field of view; and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture lens, 3x optical zoom, and optical image stabilization. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy S22 has a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and an angle of view of 80 degrees.
Also included is an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. The phone weighs 168 grams and measures 146×70.6×7.6mm.
Samsung Galaxy S22+: Specifications
The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is powered by Android 12 and comes with One UI 4.1 on top. The phone has a 6.6-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with Samsung’s Eye Comfort Shield for blue light reduction, and adaptive 120Hz refresh rate that can be reduced to 10Hz, and a peak brightness of 1,750 nits. The Galaxy S22+ is powered by an octa-core 4nm SoC with up to 12GB of RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy S22+ has a triple rear camera setup, including a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and a 120-degree field-of-view. The handset includes a 50-megapixel dual-pixel autofocus wide-angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens, as well as a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilisation (OIS), and an f/2.4 aperture lens. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 has a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and an 80-degree field of view.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 comes with up to 256GB of internal storage and features 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth v5.2, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. Accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, geomagnetic, gyroscope, hall, and proximity sensor are among the sensors onboard. An ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor is also included with the phone. The Galaxy S22 is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 45W fast charging, as well as 15W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare for reverse wireless charging. The phone weighs 196 grammes and measures 157.4×75.8×7.6mm.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Specifications
The S22 Ultra is the top-of-the-line model, with a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with QHD+ resolution. The screen is curved and has a refresh rate of 120Hz. With a peak brightness of 1750 nits, the Ultra model also has the brightest display of any phone. It is protected against drops and scratches by a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ layer.
A quad-camera setup on the back of the flagship smartphone includes a 108MP f/1.8 main camera sensor. It has two 10MP camera sensors and a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera. The f/2.4 aperture on one of the 10MP telephoto camera sensors allows for up to 3x optical zoom. The other 10MP sensor has an f/4.9 aperture and can shoot at 10X optical zoom. Inside the hole-punch camera, the cutout is a 40MP front camera for selfies and video calls.
The phone’s battery capacity is 5000 mAh, and it supports 45W fast charging and 15W wireless charging. Depending on the region, it’s also available with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC or an Exynos 2200 SoC. Samsung is expected to launch the phone in India with a Snapdragon processor. The phone comes pre-installed with One UI 4.1, which is based on Android 12. It has IP68 water and dust resistance rating.
Price and Availability
The 8GB + 128GB, 12GB + 256GB, 12GB + 512GB, and 12GB + 1TB storage configurations of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra were released. The base model costs $1,199 and includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (roughly Rs 89,800). The prices for the remaining three storage options will be announced soon. The phone is available in four colors: Phantom Black, Phantom Green, Phantom White, and Phantom Burgundy.
The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ are available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Galaxy S22 costs $799 (roughly Rs 59,600), while the Galaxy S22+ costs $999. (roughly Rs 74,800). Phantom Black, Phantom White, Phantom Green, and Pink Gold are the colors available for both devices.
The RAM and storage options for the India variant were leaked just hours before the launch. In India, Samsung is expected to release the devices in March.
