Volkswagen will tap into Microsoft’s cloud computing for developing self-driving software

Volkswagen dropped the hint of developing self-driving software in the future when the company decided to use Microsoft’s Azure software back in 2018. The two companies made a deal three years ago that Volkswagen will use Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service and link it to the cars. And, from the announcement made on 11th February 2021, the software updates will be developed in this cloud from where they will be directly downloaded in the cars.

The technology behind developing self-driving cars has been a hot topic for quite some time now. Yesterday’s announcement was all about making it public that Microsoft’s cloud computing service will be used to streamline the software development updates for self-driving cars.

Volkswagen Position in the Automobile Industry

The two brands Audi and Porsche that are owned by Volkswagen are working on developing self-driving cars. Though these brands are under the same parent company, they are working independently to give their brands an exclusive presence. Self-driving cars are the future of the automobile industry and that future is not very far. Both Audi and Porsche are working on self-assisting driving features like adaptive cruise control. But these features will not be designed for every self-driving model of the companies.

In an effort to make the designing process smooth, Volkswagen brought all these development efforts together into a subsidiary last year. The name of the subsidiary is Car. Software and this was an initiative taken by the company to establish proper coordination among all the makers. Though each company was responsible for handling its own work, design, and visual prototype, all of them needed to work on some features together as they were common for all cars, for example, obstacle detection. All these groups in spite of working within a common group used different systems for developing the software for self-driving cars.

So finally, the company decided to put all the updates on a common cloud server, and hence the deal was announced yesterday in collaboration with Microsoft. This information was given to Reuters by Dirk Hilgenberg, Chief Executive of Car. Software. Every brand will have an opportunity to examine the work of others and modify their software accordingly.

Work to be done

The deal between Microsoft and Volkwagen also included deploying software updates to the car so that any new feature can be instantly downloaded into the care system. This is one such practice that helped Tesla to move far ahead of the competition and ahead of time as well. Along with mentioning the reason why Volkswagen decided to update all new features in one place, Dirk also mentioned that “over-the-air updates are paramount: without which the company might lose the firm ground in the self-driving automobile field.

The main objective behind this entire practice of software updates for self-driving cars is that today you are hitting the road with a car with little self-driving assistance in it. But, subsequently, new features will come along and in no time you will be able to access them thus taking you one step towards a more flexible world of autonomous driving. In response to this new deal, Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft, said that. “That ability to start to program the vehicle in richer and richer ways, and in a safe way, transforms how the experience works.” while explaining how to receive updates in our mobile phones within very short intervals.

How Self-driving cars will change the future?

The main theory behind building a self-driving car is to design sensors that can track all objects around the car and embedding the technology on how to react if it is about to bump into one. But, it is easier said than done. The idea of self-driving technology is keeping almost every leading car company out there. But, with the pace of advancement taking place, the ones who won’t be able to keep up with this drastic change will face severe business problems. At the same time, experts predict that with the amount of brainstorming put into developing self-driving car technology, the next decade might bring enormous opportunities for automakers and technology developers. Evolution is the only means to survive whether they are mankind or machines.

Microsoft president says it has fallen victim to the SolarWinds hack

Microsoft alerts the world as it claims to be the victim of the recent SolarWinds hack presumably by the Russian-backed hacker group. Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said that this attack provides a moment of reckoning. With the year coming to an end, the final weeks have become more challenging due to the nation-wide cyber-attack shaking the strong security foundation of the United States. Brad further said that the recent threat shows how the cybersecurity landscape is changing and becoming more dangerous for the world. The latest cyber assault has effective both the government of the United States and many companies in the tech sector.

Possessing a threat to Microsoft

Since the software of SolarWinds is used by many customers around the globe, the victim list is increasing every day. Microsoft has also announced that its system was exposed to the hack though the degree of casualties is not mentioned. Smith further mentioned that the act has created a serious technical vulnerability for the U.S. and it was done deliberately to advance a nation’s intelligence agency. Though Smith didn’t accuse the Russians explicitly but put clear hints and remarks.

In the blog post by Brad Smith, he has shown a map illustrating the geographical density of the customers affected by the SolarWinds software. The map has used telemetry from Microsoft’s Defender Anti-virus software to elaborate the effects of the hack. It shows the audience that the victims are scattered around the globe but the U.S. is the most affected nation. According to Microsoft, 80% of the affected customers are located in the U.S. and other victims are spotted in Canada, UK, Belgium, Spain, Mexico, Israel, and UAE.

The SolarWinds hack

The past week newspapers have been crawling with the news of a nationwide cyber attack first spotted by the security firm FireEye. The hackers inserted the malware into the network management software used by customers around the globe. SolarWinds is the company that sells this product to the other giant tech companies and the malware was spotted when FireEye updated the software.

When investigating the attack, traces were found that several U.S. government agencies have also been compromised. When SolarWinds reported the attack, around 17,000 customers already downloaded the compromised update. After announcing the cyber attack, Kevin Mandia, CEO of FireEye said that “we are witnessing an attack by a nation with top-tier offensive capabilities.” Currently, the FBI and Homeland Security are investigating the matter.

Ongoing investigation

The hackers have attacked several sectors of government from the Navy to the U.S. military along with the major companies of fortune 500. So, the investigators have to track digital footprints for all the sectors separately. On Wednesday, there was a joint statement regarding the whole-of-government-response issued by the FBI (The Federal Bureau of Investigation), CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), and ODNI (Office of the Director of National Intelligence).

Microsoft has introduced blocking versions of SolarWinds Orion that contained the malware. Microsoft along with other tech companies has seized the control of a domain responsible for the SolarWinds breach. SolarWinds has decided not to reveal the names of the Fortune 500 companies that are affected by the breach. It will help both SolarWinds and the companies from avoiding negative publicity. And, Microsoft has urged to take stronger steps against cyber-attacks for both government and private level.

A challenging year

This year started with the global pandemic, shaking the entire social and economical wellbeing of every citizen around the world. On top of this, cyber-attacks have proven to use more novel techniques for stealing sensitive information and destroying the moral foundations of any nation. This year has also witnessed the attacks on several research institutes and companies researching COVID-19 vaccines. In March, cyberattacks increased rapidly on both private and public health networks targeting from local government to the World Health Organization.

According to Microsoft, the company has spotted three nation-state actors targeting seven prominent companies involved in the treatment of COVID-19. Amidst a global crisis, such cyber assaults are very daunting for any nation and its people. A government is supposed to protect the nation’s people, and if the government itself is under attack, soon there will big chaos.

Microsoft Teams to roll out free all-day video and voice calling options to take on Zoom

The global pandemic has increased the demand for video calling apps to several folds within a few months. Since the entire world is getting accustomed to the new normal, from kindergarten kids to business professionals are relying on videoconferencing applications. Among the many video conferencing apps, it was Zoom that started owning the market at the beginning and was extremely successful. But, it was soon followed by zoom bombing and then sharing the market with Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.

With that being said, just days after Zoom announced that it will lift the 40 minutes meeting timing for Thanksgiving Day, Microsoft Teams comes with a brand new option of free all-day video and voice calling. The latter is rolling out a bunch of new options to give a hard competition to Zoom and attract Zoom users to its platform. The company confirmed the news through a blog post.

What is new in Microsoft Team?

The new all-day video and voice calling option will not only be hard on Zoom but Google Meet as well. The free 24 hrs calling will allow 300 participants to connect be it a video call or a voice call. Apart from the free all-day calling the platform is also expanding its ability to create a group chat maximum of 250 participants. The user will see up to 49 members simultaneously during virtual conversations. The company hasn’t specified if there is an end date to this free 24-hours calling. This new feature will immensely help existing users and attract new users as well. With Zoom’s compromised security then deciding to enable end-to-end encryption for only paid users followed by rolling it out for everyone has signaled instability of the platform. So, maybe this new feature of MS Teams will make it own the market.

Apart from expanding the chat capability, Microsoft is also adding support to upload and share photos and videos from your computer. Users can share these directly in any group chat or video chat. Both the Teams desktop and the web apps are including more options letting professionals add their account to chat with friends and family.

Does everyone need a Microsoft account?

The company has mentioned that like every other video conferencing platform, it is not mandatory to have a Microsoft account to attend a meeting. The user can join a Microsoft Teams meeting without opening an account or installing the Teams app only by clicking on the link that has been sent by the host. Users can simply attend the meeting from the web browser. Moreover, the platform is trying to connect as many people as possible by getting seamless syncing of chats between the phone and the computer. As mentioned earlier, the platform will also show 49 others in the meeting in a gallery view similar to the Zoom app. This is done by using the Together Mode feature in MS Teams.

New features for Teams mobile app

Apart from overall updating the Microsoft Teams platform, the mobile users can communicate with their contacts that do not have Teams on their smartphone. The chosen contact by the user will receive an SMS and the receiver can respond to it via simple text messages. Moreover, the recipient will receive a link to download Microsoft Teams on their phones. The SMS support will be available to the Teams app in preview only for US and Canadian users. An additional feature of adding group events from chat to the device calendar will also be available. Users can also get task and location updates in the activity feed along with adding photos to the personal Safe. The new location feature is made to let your family and loved ones know about your whereabouts so that you are safe. They will receive alerts during your departure and arrival time as well. Microsoft Teams is trying to make the platform as personalized and secure as possible for the users. The company also says that they are expecting the feedbacks are the user input matters a lot.

Last month, the company announced that it surpassed the mark of 115 million daily active users and they want to make it a communication solution for everyone.

Scribd Acquires SlideShare from LinkedIn in Surprise Move

SlideShare has changed hands for the second time now, having bought out from LinkedIn at an undisclosed price. As per news reports, the presentation-sharing platform now has a new owner in the form of rival Scribd. LinkedIn has released an official statement saying that Scribd will officially take over operations from September 24th. Here’s a look at how the acquisition came to be, and what it means for the business.

Common Missions and Goals

Trip Adler, who serves as the CEO of Scribd, stated that both the companies share a lot of values and ideas, both having similar journeys and backgrounds. Both the presentation-sharing platforms started in 2006-2007, announcing their arrival through TechCrunch, and both the companies share similar roles and responsibilities. The CEO stated that the companies share a joint mission, both being involved with presentation and document sharing. The major difference being that while SlideShare focused on PowerPoint presentations, Scribd developed PDFs and Word Doc files. Also, while SlideShare marketed more towards the business users, Scribd was more concerned with the general consumers.

Differences Later On

Over the years though the companies drifted apart naturally, as a result of mergers, acquisitions, and a general change in strategy. LinkedIn acquired SlideShare in 2012, and four years later joined with Microsoft through an acquisition. Meanwhile, Scribd branched out into a Netflix-style subscription model for both e-books and audiobooks. However, Adler reaffirmed that for Scribd, both the premium and user-generated sides were crucial.

Opportunity Arises

Hence, when both Microsoft and LinkedIn came to Scribd regarding an acquisition, Adler was very interested. He saw it as an opportunity to expand the company’s user base further. Scribd feels that having SlideShare on board will help them develop their document side, by integrating with their product, SlideShare’s vast content library. SlideShare, owing to its huge popularity, has over 40 million presentations on it and enjoys a user base of over 100 million unique visitors every month.

Adler believes that the acquisition will help Scribd leverage both SlideShare’s audience and content, helping Scribd grow exponentially. Furthermore, Adler also believes that Scribd can benefit from integrating SlideShare’s technology with its own. While Scribd will not be adding employees to its roster, it will not oversee the operations of the existing SlideShare team. Furthermore, SlideShare will continue as an independent service, and will not merge with Scribd to form one platform. He also hopes that the platform’s integration with LinkedIn too will remain as strong as it is now. Adler also made it clear that there will be no changes in the initial months, as decades’ worth of experience has given the team enough insight to know how to turn SlideShare genuinely successful.

LinkedIn’s Acquisition

LinkedIn took over the content and document sharing platform SlideShare in 2012, for $119 million split as both stock and cash. SlideShare is a massively popular document and presentation sharing website that even the likes of IBM use to curate their content. After the signing of the deal, the companies mentioned that their relationship was like that of Peanut Butter and Chocolate, as they were mutually complementary. The deal, worth slightly less than $119 million will be split 45% through cash and the remaining 55% through stock. Four years later, in December 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for a whopping $26.2 billion.

SlideShare’s Competitors

Some of SlideShare and Scribd’s most significant competitors include the following presentation sharing platforms.

  • SharePresentation is a high-quality web platform that supports the uploading and sharing of various kinds of presentations and documents. The platform offers a variety of functions and services that allow users to share information and improve their reach significantly.
  • Authorstream is another online document management and sharing platform that allows users to share their work with the world. It supports various multi-functional features, has an intuitive interface that is simple and easy to use.

VP of Engineering at LinkedIn, Chris Pruett released a statement highlighting the work that LinkedIn had done on the platform after acquiring it. LinkedIn took over SlideShare in 2012 to build its platform and make it more suitable for business professionals. The collaboration with SlideShare has helped the platform engage the community, and shape its content management and experience. As a new future awaits SlideShare, we will have to wait and see how Scribd develops and takes the platform forward.

TikTok

Twitter shows interest in buying TikTok’s US operations by outbidding Microsoft

ByteDance, a Chinese company is the owner of the very famous video sharing platform, TikTok. With the advent of the global pandemic which emerged out from the Chinese city Wuhan, many nations have turned against China. Whether it’s a serious innocent breakout of an infectious disease or a plotted biological weapon is still in question. But, with almost every country around the globe suffering tremendously, many unpredictable decisions have been taking place.

Last week, Trump announced the ban of TikTok along with other Chinese apps from the U.S. Apart from all the other Chinese applications; TikTok has a very wide user base not only in the U.S. but also around the world. Trump has expressed the need of the hour to ban these Chinese apps as they might be responsible for serious data theft that can put the nation’s security in jeopardy. So, with a 45-days timeline to ban the usage of any Chinese apps by the U.S. citizens, Microsoft showed interest in buying the U.S. operations of TikTok. But, it is only yesterday that Twitter showed interest in buying the same by outdoing Microsoft in bidding.

Can Twitter manage to Finance?

Yesterday, the news of Twitter being interested to buy ByteDance owned TikTok was delivered to Reuters from a trusted source. But, it is a big question if Twitter has the capital to buy the U.S. operations of TikTok. The market capitalization of Twitter is around $30 billion which is nearly equal to the assets of TikTok put on sale. On the other hand, Microsoft’s market capitalization is around $1.3 trillion which makes the scenario clear about the bidding.

So, if Twitter is having a serious plan to buy the U.S. operations of TikTok, it needs to raise additional capital. In a normal situation, it would have been easy to raise money, but with the pandemic creating havoc in the financial world and a time strain of 45-days it is a very difficult task.

Due to these two important factors, Microsoft is still on the run and occupy the first place for the bidding. Erik Gordon, a professor from the University of Michigan said that Twitter doesn’t have enough borrowing capacity making it even harder to acquire the U.S. operations of TikTok. Moreover, the current shareholders of Twitter might think that expanding business in this crisis might be a big risk and it will be better if the company (Twitter) focuses on its existing business.

Protecting the Nation

A couple of months back India decided to take strict action against China because of two main reasons, first the outbreak of COVID-19 from Wuhan which might be a strong conspiracy against the world, and second, the dispute regarding LAC. So, Indian banned all the Chinese apps hence taking a big step and protecting the nation’s security from compromising. Now, a similar action was taken by the American president, Donald Trump, thus banning Chinese apps like TikTok and WeChat.

Trump has also mentioned that this is one step forward towards protecting sensitive information and privacy of U.S. citizens from China. These apps are gaining access to information of every user and it can be used against the U.S. for many purposes. He also told that the ban of Chinese apps will also improve Clean Network thus adding five more lines of effort, namely, Clean Carrier, Clean Cable, Clean Apps, Clean Store, and Clean Cloud. And, lastly, he gave a deadline of 45 days and in mid-September, the ban will be imposed completely.

TikTok’s current reputation

With the novel coronavirus pandemic, the reputation of China as well as its apps is degrading. But, TikTok is used by billions of users around the world, and especially in the U.S., it has millions of fans. Many citizens of the U.S. have expressed outrage towards Donald Trump after he declared the ban of TikTok. But, no matter what a nation’s security should always be the priority. Moreover, it will also become a golden opportunity for the country’s app developers to create something similar and make it a big hit.

The relationship between Twitter and Donald Trump has become sour as the president accused the platform of unfairly censoring him. So, apart from the capital of Microsoft being incredibly bigger than Twitter’s, it is likely Trump will support the acquisition by Microsoft.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Returns to Take Us to The Skies

If you grew up gaming in the 1990s, then there’s a high chance you know about the Microsoft Flight Simulator. To most 90’s kids, the Flight Simulator is the first thing they would associate to the tech giant, even more than Word and Excel! For most children of that age, it was the best game on the PC as it truly took them to the skies. It has been a while since Microsoft has released updates regarding their plans for the game. However, the company will soon be releasing a significant update, and the news is exciting gamers around the world. Here’s a look at why the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is so phenomenal, and the cultural significance of the game.

Rare Updates

While the game defined Microsoft in the 90s, it seldom looked back at it during the 2010s. The brand has been lurking in the darkness for a good part of the last decade. The last update or release on the franchise came in the form of 2006’s Flight Simulator X. A few years down the line, Microsoft shut down the game developer Aces Game Studio, as a part of their widespread layoffs. Later, the 2012 spin-off called Microsoft Flight was not well-received by critics or gamers, leaving many to believe the franchise was over for good. However, in a few weeks, Microsoft will release the most significant addition to the franchise throughout its 38-year heritage. Titled Microsoft Flight Simulator, and developed by Aosobo, a French development studio, this is one of Microsoft’s most ambitious projects.

What It Aims to Do

The project will help bring together data from Bing Maps and use Azure’s innovative procedural generation methodology to bring to life details we have never seen before. Critics who have already started playing the pre-release alpha were left dumbfounded at the attention to detail in the game. Considered an exquisite effort from Microsoft, gamers have already hailed the Flight Simulator, the best yet successfully shouldering the expectations of millions. However, a popular question many had were; Why now? Why did Microsoft reinvent the wheel with the series in 2020?

Why Now?

Jorg Neumann, who serves as the tech giant’s head of Flight Simulator, stated that the company switched focus to Xbox in the last decade. After launching Flight Simulator X, Microsoft focused mainly on expanding its gaming market share through developing the Xbox. He says that while the desire and intent to make a follow-up simulator always existed, it never seemed like the right time.  The team often found themselves unsure of what to add, what vision to follow, and how to take things forward.

Inspiration and Development

Recently, Neumann began working on Microsoft’s AR headset HoloLens, which featured a demo version of HoloTour. This application allows users to fly through places Machu Picchu and Rome, being their first collaboration with Bing Maps. Neumann recalls how the experience felt so surreal due to the sheer amount of detail that was possible using this technology. This was when he thought that transferring such gameplay to the simulator would be revolutionary. A year later, he contacted Asobo with the plan, and the team started work on building a realistic map of Seattle, which is also Microsoft’s home city. Asobo built a demo version that featured a Cessna plane flying in downtown Seattle, accurate to a mind-blowing 5-cm resolution. Neumann showed the demo to Vice President Phil Spencer, who now heads the Xbox division.

Though Asobo did not have much experience building a flight simulator before, Neumann trusted them with the project. Their team had worked on an open-world terrain racer game called Fuel in 2009, which made use of both satellite data and procedural techniques. They leveraged that experience to create a realistic and credible game environment for the MFS 2020. Martial Bossard, who is a co-founder of Asobo, said the team visited flight schools to understand how the flying experience truly feels. He also stated that it reminded him of how he had started gaming himself, as he began his journey on a flight simulator. Neumann sent help to Asobo in the form of the older Flight Simulator X engine, helping speed up the development process.

End Result

All this time and effort has led to the creation of a brilliant simulator.  The Microsoft Flight Simulator distinctly resembles actual flying and combines this with breath-taking visuals. The reactive clouds and weather, beautiful imagery, and accurate gameplay all add to the experience in a profound way. However, as of now, Microsoft does not have high-quality data for all regions across the world. Since AI cannot generate landmarks, bridges, and other unique objects, they will have to be built by hand. However, Neumann has stated that the team will work on building those world elements, helping make the MSF a global game. The game will launch on the Xbox Game Pass PC Version, followed by an Xbox version soon enough. The PC version will also support VR rendering, helping increase the game’s fan base.

We aren’t sure how the game will run on Xbox consoles due to the technical requirements of the game. However, it is clear to see that Microsoft has created a very accessible simulator that many will grow to love. Not only is this an incredible achievement technically, but one that will help repackage an old favorite into the hearts of a new crowd.
