OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT app for iOS

The ChatGPT app is going mobile. After the App Store was flooded with questionable, unofficial services for several months, OpenAI announced the release of an official iOS app that enables users to use its well-known AI chatbot while on the road.

The company claims that the newly released ChatGPT app will be free to download and use, ad-free, and voice-enabled, but it will only be available to users in the United States at first.

The ChatGPT app, like its desktop equivalent, enables users to communicate with an AI chatbot to ask queries without performing a standard online search and to receive advice, discover inspiration, study, conduct research, and do other things.

Given the problems with Apple’s own voice assistant, Siri, and Apple’s own lack of advancement in artificial intelligence, the latest update may encourage more customers to adopt ChatGPT as their primary mobile assistant.

Since Google now reaps the benefits of serving as the default search provider in Safari on Apple’s iPhone, the launch may also have an effect on Google.

When using ChatGPT on a mobile device, the app will sync your history across devices, which means it will remember any searches you’ve made through its web interface and make those results available to you.

In order to support voice input, Whisper, an open-source speech recognition technology from OpenAI, is also integrated into the app.

OpenAI claims that ChatGPT Plus members will have early access to additional features and quicker response times in addition to being able to use GPT-4’s capabilities through the new app. “ChatGPT Plus subscribers get exclusive access to GPT-4’s capabilities, early access to features, and faster response times, all on iOS,” the company stated.

The technology that underpins the highly successful ChatGPT has been replaced by the potent artificial intelligence model GPT-4. Earlier in February, OpenAI unveiled a $20 per month test subscription package for their well-known AI-powered chatbot, named ChatGPT Plus.

According to the corporation, the roll-out of iOS is already underway in the United States and will soon be extended to new nations. With the release of ChatGPT at the end of last year, the public competition to control the AI technology market began. This spurred big giants like Alphabet Inc. and Meta to promote their own products.

The release of the ChatGPT app coincides with major tech companies, such as Google, Microsoft, and Facebook, experimenting with AI. Google and Microsoft have also integrated artificial intelligence (AI) features into their search engines, the latter of which was accomplished through a costly partnership with OpenAI.

But having direct access to ChatGPT on a mobile device rather than through a search engine or browser may significantly alter how users now use their phones to look for and engage with information.

Microsoft To End Support for SwiftKey on iOS Devices From October 5, 2022

Microsoft has evidently confirmed that the firm is terminating the support for SwiftKey predictive text keyboard on iOS. The firm has updated its support page to point out the news that iPhone users can no longer download this application as of October 5 since it will be delisted on the App Store.

Director of Product Management at SwiftKey, Microsoft, Chris Wolfe has claimed that the firm will continue to support for SwiftKey on Android and confirmed the delisting, stating:

“As of October 5, support for SwiftKey iOS will end and it will be delisted from the Apple App Store. Microsoft will continue support for SwiftKey Android as well as the underlying technology that powers the Windows touch keyboard. For those customers who have SwiftKey installed on iOS, it will continue to work until it is manually uninstalled or a user gets a new device. Please visit Support.SwiftKey.com for more information.”

What is SwiftKey

SwiftKey is a common keyboard application for smartphones that provides predictive texting with AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms. This app attempts to guess what the users want to say even before they type and also enables users to type in multiple languages simultaneously and they don’t have to switch between languages. Additionally, the application provides multiple different and unique customizable themes and many more things.

SwiftKey has been downloaded by more than 500 million users on their Android devices. That may be the reason why the app will continue to be available and supported on Android. SwiftKey received its last update for Android in May that made it easier for the users to delete text and it has also added an additional option to disable the automatic spaces after every punctuation.

Microsoft acquired the SwiftKey platform was already one of the highly popular keyboard applications on Android and iOS as it has achieved revenue of about 250 million dollars in 2016. It was rolled out on Android in 2010 and arrived on iOS in 2014.

SwiftKey’s technology is also being used in Windows 11, particularly for the windows touch keyboard, and furthermore, it is also capable of syncing the clipboard data between Windows and Android devices.

Why Microsoft is terminating SwiftKey on iOS

The U.S tech giant has not given a clear reason for its decision to end the SwiftKey support for iPhone users. They might be facing issues and challenges to provide the enhanced cross-device experience that it wants for iOS users. Furthermore, some users on Reddit indicated that the iOS version of SwiftKey has not even received the latest update for about a year.

The firm has also updated the Android client ability of SwiftKey with the ability to sync clipboard over devices using the cloud recently which is difficult to be done on the iOS platform since Apple’s closed ecosystem prohibits certain applications from accessing important parts of iOS and maintains some restrictions on were these keyboards can or cannot be used.

They cannot be used to type passwords or other passcodes and they can be forbidden on smartphones that are locked down through MDM (mobile device management) software. Apple has added certain most common third-party keyboard features to the built-in iOS keyboards in recent years such as searchable emoji and swiping to type

This might be the reason why apps like Phone Link are only available and accessible on Android and not on iOS. Since the SwiftKey keyboard is discontinued, users can switch to other alternatives like Google’s Gboard.

Apple in collaboration with Google launched COVID-19 ‘Exposure Notification Express’ via iOS 13.7

Only after the outburst of the novel coronavirus, Apple and Google started working together to develop a contact tracing system. The system was designed in a way that new apps can be created by PHAs (Public Health Authorities) and this system will be incorporated. So, whoever downloaded and installed this app when came close to another person using the app data will automatically be transferred and saved. This helped later to get notified if the user in the past few days came in contact with a COVID-19 patient or not.

Yesterday, the two companies announced a big advancement in the existing technology by rolling out new tools. The new tools are launched to make the task for PHAs easier as they do not need to maintain their apps. Currently, the tool has been incorporated in iOS 13.7 and Google is working on the same for Android. For Android, there will be an automatically generated application that will be implemented in Android 6.0 later this month.

What is Exposure Notification Technology?

Exposure notification technology or exposure notification API is software made jointly by Google and Apple to help the PHAs incorporate it in apps. After the PHAs and other organizations built these apps with incorporated exposure notification API they can release it publicly. The general public can use these apps to stay updated about the COVID-19 cases around them and if they came in contact with any of the affected patients.

Both the companies took care of the user’s privacy and hence encrypted the transmitted Bluetooth metadata. Keeping in mind public privacy, the location information of the users is not exposed. Instead of this, the notification alert just shows a time and place where the device came in close Bluetooth range with other devices. So, if a user-tested COVID-19 positive and updated in the app only then the other users will receive notification that they came in contact with a potential COVID patient. The first version (Beta version) of this software was released in May 2020. But, now Apple has announced about the modified system which will not require creating a separate app by any PHA anymore.

No separate apps required anymore

Since changes in the software have been made, people might get a little confused. The working system of this new modified tool is different for both iOS and Android. It is a bit complex for Android and that is why it will launch later this month. So, the most striking and best improvement is that you don’t have to download and install an app on your own that is created by the PHAs to keep yourself updated.

Instead of downloading the app, you will receive notification from your local health authority then you can choose to opt-in. If you are an iOS user you have to install a provisioning profile and in case of an Android user, an auto-generated app will be installed via Google Play.

Role of PHAs

The PHAs don’t have to create apps on their own, so what they will do? They will provide Apple and Google with necessary information like contact information, proper guidance procedure, the recommendation for effected patients, precautions for those who came in contact with the virus, etc. Then the notification system can deliver it to the users helping them to take necessary steps as required.

The local health authorities are still responsible for what messages should be sent and the further steps if someone with positive COVID-test updates in the database. So, they are just relieved of developing their apps as most of the tech part is covered by Apple and Google. But, in the meantime already 20 countries around the world have developed and launched their apps.

Implementation of this new system

This new Exposure Notification Express will be first implemented by DC, Maryland, Nevada, and Virginia. Both Apple and Google are also working with the U.S. Association of Public Health Laboratories that will help the users to track even after they are traveling out of their home state. It is proven that this system has helped in reducing the spread of COVID-19 and preventing many deaths.

Dark Sky

Dark Sky No Longer Available to Android and Wear Device Users

There have been quite a few takeovers and acquisitions in the tech world in recent months. Furthermore, there have also been several bans and issues arising out of socio-political complications leading to apps having limited accessibility. Adding to that list is a popular app used to check on weather conditions, Dark Sky. Apple acquired the app earlier this year, announcing it would take the app off the Android platform, and did so recently. Here’s a look at the popular weather app that Android users will no longer have access to in the future.

Apple’s Acquisition

The iPhone maker acquired the weather app sometime in March this year, deciding to make it unavailable for Android users. Though the initial plan was to take it off the market in July, the decision was later delayed by a month. However, recently users realised that the app had been removed from the Android platform. The shutdown has been put into motion, making the app officially discontinued, and inaccessible to Android users. Also, users who had paid and subscribed for the services will receive full refunds as per reports. All the Wear-enabled and Android apps shut down on August 1, 2020.

iOS Platforms Stay Active

However, the app’s services will remain unaffected on iOS platforms. They will still be able to install and use the app, and its complete functionality as before via the iOS App Store. However, when Apple acquired Dark Sky, they stated that the API for the app would only function until 2021. The report said that the company would not be accepting new signups after that period. According to an official weblog summit right after the acquisition, Adam Grossman, who serves as a co-founder of Dark Sky, stated that it would continue to provide top-notch services. The app aims to provide accurate and reliable information regarding the weather. He said that Dark Sky worked to help as many people as possible while respecting user privacy. The company was excited to begin their association with Apple, and Grossman stated that they were hoping to reach out to more people in a larger way.

Delayed Removal

However, while the weather app went off Android only in August, it was supposed to leave much earlier. The app kept its doors open on the other platforms longer than initially planned. While the initial plan was to shut down operations by early July, the company moved the removal ahead by a month to August. However, the apps were taken off the Playstore in July, meaning that only users who had it installed could keep using it for an extra month, as per 9to5Google.

Refund Alert

The company has also clarified that users who had paid for services beyond August will receive full refunds. Dark Sky used to charge Android users $2.99 annually to access their full functionality. Meanwhile, iOS users have to pay only $3.99 at the time of purchase to access the app’s services. Furthermore, Dark Sky will remove maps, weather forecasts, and other embeds from their official website in August as well. However, the Dark Sky API will remain active until the end of 2021. But, the company no longer accepts new signups, resulting in third-party apps being cut off from the app’s data soon enough.

Unfortunate Takeovers

The case, in many ways, is similar to how Amazon acquired Eero last year. Many experts were apprehensive of how a large tech-company taking over such small independent companies would affect the tech scene. A lot of people support such small companies as they run independently. However, these users are left worried about what the tech giant plans to do to the product they love and use. With Apple and Dark Sky, the acquisition has led to the app being no longer available to Android users. Users loved dark Sky as it gave them hyper-local and reliable weather forecasts that were very accurate and up-to-date.

Furthermore, users also did not have to worry about whether their data was being sold or transferred. The news is even more painful as the same fate had befallen another beloved weather app called Weather Timeline a year ago. The app was bought by a company that has a history of selling data, leaving fans discouraged. Furthermore, all the other apps that use Dark Sky’s APIs will also have to look for other weather data sources. While Android users are angry, they can no longer use this great app, the silver line here is that at least the service will remain active on iOS. Also, experts are curious to see what Apple plans to do with the Dark Sky API. We will have to wait and see whether the tech giant will incorporate it into their unique weather app or offer it as a secondary service on a monthly subscription model.

Slack

Slack Out with Beta Version of Major Update That Betters User-Interface

Slack’s mobile applications are now trying to duplicate a desktop or browser experience by using a single home screen. The company is also working on improving its swipe-based navigation. However, a new update, which will roll out on an Android Beta channel, will try to do away with these cumbersome issues. The latest beta version aims to create a more straightforward and more user-friendly app that introduces significant interface changes.

New Features in the Update

Without a doubt, the most significant change the update will bring is a new navigation bar that will allow users to switch between sections. Such a bar, which will be at the bottom of the page, will enable users to move between sections without excessive swiping. Also, it makes it easier to scan through menus and read chats with ease in the beta version. The bar will also have a home screen button, which will showcase all channels on your device. When on this screen, you can swipe right to go to your other workspaces, and left, if you wish to backtrack to the last channel you visited. Near the home tab, there will be a DM tab to help you access your private message tab.

Also, the bar will have a Mentions tab that enables you to organize your activity session, which used to be hard to get to in the older versions of the app. The last tab on the right will take you to your profile, and will serve as a You tab. Furthermore, the new compose tab will help you start new chats with people via DM. These new upgrades will significantly help with improving Slack’s Android user experience. The app was notorious for burying features and limiting ease of access to vital functions via drop-down menus and options.

Easier for Users

The cluttered sidebar, which was notorious for making remote collaboration more robust, has been improved to make it easier for users to find and join new channels. Furthermore, the addition of a new drag and drop option also makes it easy to group channels and conversations into sections that can collapse when needed. Users can also easily access files, apps, reactions, and mentions from the bar perched on top of the search bar.

The new Compose DM button also makes it easier for users to draft a new message when something comes up urgently, as you get to prepare the message and then attach a recipient to it. The latest update will also make it possible for users to drag, drop, and group channels, folders, and DMs into customizable sections. However, this feature will be available only to customers who pay to use the app, and not for the freeware users.  Additionally, there will be a new lightning bolt button, which will be put next to the message field to allow users to open a new app or utility tool when required.

Current App Issues

In the current beta version, you can access the channel list via the workspace icon, which is present on the upper-left corner of the screen. Another way to do this is to swipe left, in case you do not use the new Q gesture system, which has changed the gesture system tremendously. The DM tab and workspace are buried below layers of buttons and swipes, with them coming out only after you swipe to bring it out. However, ease of use has not changed drastically when you look at Slack on iOS.

The iOS update does not have a navigation bar, though it does come with better swiping options, which allow users to access more parts of the application. Therefore, it is safe to say that the new updates will help make Slack more user-friendly and fast. Once people get used to the new interface, they will find it a lot simpler and efficient. However, we are still not sure when Slack will come out with a public and final version of this update, and whether it will carry additional changes as well.

Whatever might be the case, the changes that have been discussed by the app are welcome ones, which users will definitely appreciate and encourage! In case you want to switch to the version anyway, you can download the Beta version from the PlayStore.
