Alec Oxenford : Co-founder & Former CEO of OLX

Alec Oxenford, born and brought up in Argentina, is an entrepreneur and a technology enthusiast, who has the credits for the establishing the foundation of some multi-billion projects. The native of Argentina, Oxenford completed his graduation in Business Administration from the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina, and later, joined Harvard University to pursue a master’s degree in the same stream.

Career

As soon as Oxenford completed his education, he started working at Boston Consulting Group. After working for six long years with the same company, Oxenford gained more skills and experience and founded DeRemate, an online consumer-to-consumer trading platform in Latin America, that was later acquired by eBay in 2005.

The time he was successfully running DeRemate, he also co-founded DineroMail.com, a popular payment platform in Latin America, in March 2003 and was associated with the same till December 2010.

Founding OLX

In 2006, Oxenford joined his hands with a French native and angel investor, Fabrice Grinda, to co-found another internet-based platform, as a Craigslist alternative for the world outside of the United States, OLX, a free classified for advertisements. Both were assigned the position of the CEO of the company. The idea was new, and there were not many supporters for the same. But, Oxenford and his partner were quite confident about it. The two came to the conclusion that first, they must test their portal in a native place or a developing country, to properly endorse its services. Hence, they first launched OLX for the people of Argentina, and then in a country overseas, i.e., India.

With good marketing techniques, it became popular in India in no time as a platform to online sell the second-hand items, and the goods that were no more required. Currently, OLX operates in 45 countries, with 330 million users and 60 million listings a month, becoming the largest online classified ads company.

In 2006, OLX acquired Mundoanuncio.com, another classified site to target the Hispanic market, and also invested in a Chinese classifieds site Edeng.cn, in 2007. It also started a partnership with Friendster, in 2008, and social network Hi5, in 2009. The website was modified with the social network widgets, improved search, Ajax-based editors, interactive maps, and mobile versions, with the addition of Web 2.0″ features to it, in 2008.

In 2010, the South African group Naspers acquired OLX, Oxenford remaining CEO through 2014, and Grinda remaining CEO until 2013.

In 2014, Oxenford left OLX and started working on his next project. In 2015, he co-founded another online buying and selling platform, this time especially for the mobile marketplace, named letgo. In the year 2017, the annual revenue of letgo was $375 million and confirmed for the first time that the company had a $1 billion valuation.

Personal Life

Oxenford has been an art lover and has collected various art pieces from around the world. He is also in writing and has spoken at Jóvenes Líderes in 2010, the Web 2.0 Conference in 2015, Red Innova in the years 2014, 2015, and 2016, Art Basel in 2016, and ArteBa in 2017. He was elected as the Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (2006-2011) and also received the CNN Internet Leader Award in 2001 and the Entrepreneur Award in 2003.

Alan Trefler : World Open Chess Champion & the Founder-CEO of Pegasystems

Alan Trefler is a chess master and successful entrepreneur, who keeps a low profile for its multi-billion company. Having a bright future in Chess and winning against multiple grandmasters, Trefler decided to stick to software development, that too proved to be the best of his decisions. Although he has not entirely left the game, he still plays the exhibition matches with former grandmasters of the game.

Early Life

Alan Trefler was born on 15 March 1956, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father Eric Trefler was the owner of an art and furniture restorer, named Trefler’s, and his mother, Dorothy Trefler, was a schoolteacher. He spent his childhood in Brookline, Massachusetts, living with his parents and brother Leon.

Trefler attended the Brookline High School and became a chess champion there, winning numerous school level chess competitions. As a teenager, he started his first part-time job at his father’s shop. In 1973, he joined Dartmouth College, where he studied economics and computer science. In 1975, he participated in the World Open Chess Championship and won the championship against the grandmaster Pal Benko.

Career

After completing his B.S., Trefler joined his first job at Casher Associates Inc., in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, as the project manager. He got the job even he was underqualified for it, as the company needed an employee on an urgent basis. Although Trefler could easily pursue his Chess career, he chose to work in a software company.

After leaving the job as the project manager, Trefler joined a software engineering firm. Later, in 1980, he successfully built a computer system that could play chess. In the same year, he started working at TMI Systems, as the team leader.

Founding Pegasystems

In April 1983, Trefler left TMI Systems, to found his own software company, named Pegasystems. He was 27, when he started the company, with an aim to enable business people to more directly instruct the machine and get the computer to really understand how business people wanted things to work. He became the CEO and the chairman of the company, and in 1996, the company went public on NASDAQ. The United States govt conferred a patent to Trefler, for Pegasystems’ distinctive rules-based architecture, which provides the framework for Pegasystems’ business process management (BPM) solutions.

The American Business Awards presented Trefler with the Stevie Award for Computer Software CEO of the Year, in 2009. He was also named the Public Company CEO of the Year, in 2011, by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council. Pegasystems entered into the field of telecommunications and healthcare when it acquired Chordiant for around $161.5 million. By the beginning of the year 2015, the company had 3,000 employees and 30 offices.

Personal Life

In 1992, Trefler married an investment banker, Pamela. The couple resides in Brookline, Massachusetts. Both of them are active philanthropists and in 1995, donated $1 million to Dorchester High School in Dorchester, Boston. In 1997, they founded The Trefler Foundation that aims to improve the urban education system. Trefler also competed in a charity chess tournament alongside grandmasters such as Garry Kasparov and Boaz Weinstein, in 2010. In March 2017, he appeared on the Forbes Billionaire’s List for the first time. He also published a book named Build for Change in 2014.

Jensen Huang : The CEO & Co-founder of Nvidia

An American entrepreneur and a businessman, Jensen Huang is the CEO and co-founder of the graphics-processor company Nvidia. Huang is an all-rounder, who as a child was placed third in junior doubles at the U.S Open and at the same time, was deeply in love with his books. He is a fan of tattoos and his love for cars as well as speed, encouraged him to buy a Ferrari 430, a Ferrari 599 and a Swedish Koenigsegg CCX. Huang is never afraid of failures and believes that it is ‘Okay to Fail’, to achieve your goals.

Early Life

Jensen Huang was born on 17 February 1963, in Tainan City, Taiwan. After some time, his family moved to Oneida, Kentucky, and then to Oregon. His family, along with his elder brother, sent him to live with their relatives, in the United States, when he was just 10 years old. There, the two joined the Baptist School, a school for troubled students. After a few years, both of them were back in Oregon, to reunite with their parents. Huang completed his high school education from the Aloha High School, outside Portland.

In 1984, Huang entered the Oregon State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He further joined Stanford University, to complete a master’s degree in the same, in 1992.

Founding Nvidia

After completing his education, Huang started working at LSI Logic as the Director of the company. He then, joined Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., as the microprocessor designer.

Huang knew that graphics is the future of computers and gaming will be the most revenue generating field in the future. In April 1993, along with his partners, Curtis Priem and Chris Malachowsky, Huang co-founded Nvidia, a software and semiconductor maker company, with a capital of $40,000.

Huang was appointed as the CEO of the company, Curtis Priem as the Chief Technical Officer and Chris as the Senior Vice President for Engineering and Operations. Chris worked at the same position for ten long years, and in 2003, he took retirement from his post.

Nvidia deals mainly in four markets including gaming, professional visualization, data centres and auto. The company has also started working in the field of artificial intelligence.

The company received $20 million of venture capital funding from Sequoia Capital and others. In 2018, the company recorded a 40.6% increase in the revenue of the company, with the earnings of US$3.047 billion.

Personal Life

Huang is married to Lori Huang, who was once his Lab partner in College. The couple has two children with their marriage.

Huang is also into Philanthropy and donated US$30 million to build the Jen-Hsun Huang School of Engineering Center to his alma mater Stanford University.

Ernst & Young named him the Entrepreneur of the Year in High Technology, in 1999. In 2003, he was presented with the Dr Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from Oregon State University. Huang was named among the world’s top 50 influencers, in the in the inaugural EDGE 50, in 2018.

Bill McDermott : The Inspirational Life Story of the First American CEO of SAP

Great minds and great ideas will find their way to success, even after facing difficulties. Such a great person with a great mind is the American businessman and the highest paid CEO of SAP SE, Bill McDermott, who despite spending his childhood in poverty emerged as one of the most powerful businessmen of America. McDermott has described his whole amazing life story in his book, “Winners Dream,” co-written by Joanne Gordon, that has been awarded a gold medal for a business memoir of the year by the Axiom Business Book Awards.

Early Life

McDermott was born in Amityville on Long Island, to Kathleen and Bill McDermott. His father worked as a power maintenance specialist at Con Edison, and his grandfather, Bobby McDermott, was a famous basketball player. According to his book, he had a tough childhood, and his family faced critical financial conditions. Even the family used to live in a house with a floor that flooded every time it rained.

McDermott, from a very tender age, started working in part-time jobs. At the age of 11, he started selling newspapers, greeting cards, cookies, and other products and saved enough money to start a new business. When he was sixteen, he bought a Country Deli for $7,000, with the money he earned in past five years, with different jobs and businesses. His County Deli business proved to be most beneficial for him, as he was able to get admission into an undergraduate course in business management at Dowling College, with the earned profits.

After completing the undergraduate course, McDermott joined Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management to pursue an MBA degree and later, attended the Wharton School of Business, where he completed the Executive Development Program.

Career

Possessed with awesome management skills and an MBA degree, McDermott managed to get a job in the sales department of Xerox. He continued working in the same department for 16 years, and at the age of 36, he was promoted to the post of Division President of Xerox’s sales, becoming the youngest person to hold that position in the company.

Later, in 2000, McDermott became the President of Gartner and served at the same position till 2002. He also worked as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Operations at Siebel Systems.

Career with SAP

In 2002, McDormett joined SAP America, as the CEO of the company. Only in few years, he was designated to the SAP Executive Board, followed by gaining the position of co-CEO of SAP AG, in February 2010. SAP is a German company, and McDermott became the first American to hold the position of the CEO of the company, on May 21, 2014.

Personal Life

McDormett is married to Julie McDormett, and the couple has two sons together. At the time he was working in Gartner, Julie suffered from breast cancer. After six months of chemo, she recovered from the disease. But later, his mother suffered and died of pancreatic cancer. The incident encouraged him to launch the Kathleen McDermott Foundation for pancreatic cancer.

McDermott is a member of the Business Roundtable and the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT). He has won many honorary awards including the GENYOUth’s Vanguard Award, the City Year’s Idealist of the Year, and the Manager of the Year by the German Business Daily.

Zhang Ruimin : The CEO & Chairman of World’s Leading Appliance Maker Company

Business is not easy to run, especially, if there are no risk takers or competent leaders. When a company is under major crisis, it’s the leader’s job to step up and take necessary actions to overcome the difficulties. Companies that survive the worst storm come out strong with exceptional energy to surpass their competitors. Haier is one such company which has emerged so strong after it almost sunk that today it has become world’s fourth largest white appliances company. And all the credit goes to Zhang Ruimin who is now the chief executive officer of Haier Group.

Early Life

Born on 9th January 1949, in Laizhou, Shandong, China, Zhang Ruimin’s parents worked in a local garment factory. During his high school, the Cultural Revolution was shaping up rapidly. As a result, he joined the Red Guards along with other students. During the revolution, most of the schools remained closed so students could not attend classes. At such free times, Zhang visited Mao’s birthplace and also attended rallies.

The revolution also resulted in shutting down of most universities, therefore, halting education once again for Zhang and other students. He started working at the state-run construction company, in Qingdao, in 1968.

Early Career

Due to the unprecedented circumstances, Zhang could not complete his education properly. But, the fire to learn and educate himself, kept burning inside him. Therefore, he used to travel back and forth, for the management courses, on his bicycle, in between his shifts. Zhang was also a voracious reader, and read extensively on management.

After years of hard work, Zhang was promoted to workshop supervisor and, after a long 12 years of service, in 1980, he was promoted to deputy director of Qingdao. In the next couple of years, Zhang got promoted to higher positions. First, as the deputy manager of ‘Household Appliance Division’ of Qingdao municipal government, and next, as the general manager of Qingdao Refrigerator Plant. The second position came to him by surprise, as the previous manager left, and the company needed someone experienced for the position. The company was in deep financial trouble when Zhang took the General Manager’s position.

Resurrecting Refrigerator Plant

Once, on a business tour to Germany, Zhang noticed some crucial problems in terms of reputation and quality. The company was performing in both the cases. While on his way back, he decided to conduct a demonstration for his workers to make them understand the importance of quality of products.

This was the time when a customer came to Zhang with a faulty refrigerator, and they both went through the whole inventory of 400 refrigerators for replacement. During this process, Zhang found out that their products had a whopping 20% failure rate. He called for all his workers and assembled around 76 faulty refrigerators. Each worker was then handed a sledgehammer, and he ordered the workers to destroy each of those 76 refrigerators. The cost of each refrigerator at that time was so high, that it could cover their two years’ worth wages. Zhang himself took part in destroying the faulty products because he believed if they didn’t destroy them the products would destroy the company one day.

This act not only created a positive attitude in workers but, also gained the company lots of publicity, which helped them to reach big markets in Tianjin and Beijing. Zhang’s management style changed the complete scenario of the company. And, by 1986, the company saw major profits, marching up to 83 per cent.

Haier Group

Qingdao Refrigerator was renamed to Qingdao Haier Group, in 1991, and Zhang was still handling the post of the general manager of the company. He also enrolled himself at the University of Science and Technology, in China, for a master’s degree in business administration. After he graduated, in 1994, and the year before, he was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Haier Group.

As a CEO he decided to spread Haier abroad and reach international markets. The company started shipping products to the Middle East and Africa. The company, soon, started expanding to numerous countries, including the United States of America, with its total workforce ranging at 30,000 people. Financial Times listed Zhang among the ’50 most respected business leaders in the world.’

Personal Life

Zhang Ruimin’s wife was a party secretary at a textile factory in Qingdao. He has a son who studied business at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Steve Ballmer : The Former CEO of Microsoft

In the past three decades, Microsoft has become one of the most successful software company, making Bill Gates the richest person in the world. Early Life

Ballmer was born as Steven Anthony Steve Ballmer, on 24 March 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, to father Beatrice Dworkin and mother Frederic Henry Ballmer. His father worked as the manager at the Ford Motor Company. He spent three years of his childhood in Brussels, where he attended the International School of Brussels. After coming back to Detroit, he joined the Detroit Country Day School. Being a bright student, Ballmer was able to win a scholarship after scoring 800 marks in the mathematical section of the SAT.

After completing his school, Ballmer joined Harvard University and earned a B.A. degree in applied mathematics and economics. In the college, he not only excelled in studies but also, acted as an important part of various college activities and clubs.

After graduating from Harvard University, he started working as the assistant product manager at Procter & Gamble. After working for two years in the same position, Ballmer decided to go back to school, and pursue a master’s degree. Hence, he enrolled in the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California.

Journey with Microsoft

Ballmer had met Bill Gates at the Harvard University, as he was also a fellow student there. In fact, Ballmer scored more than Bill Gates, in an exam conducted by the Mathematical Association of America’s. The time he was studying at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, in California, Bill Gates offered Ballmer the position of the 30th employee and the first Business Manager of Microsoft. Ballmer left his studies in between, and joined the company, on $50,000 salary and a small share in the ownership of the company.

Besides securing the position of the Business Manager of Microsoft, Ballmer also held the positions in the operations, operating systems development, and sales and support, in the company. In 1993, Ballmer became the Executive Vice President, of the Sales and Support department of Microsoft.

In July 1998, he was appointed at the second highest position of the company, becoming the President of Microsoft. He was also the head of the .NET Framework development team.

On 13 January 2000, Bill Gates handed over the position of the CEO to Ballmer, continuing as the chairman of the board, and the chief software architect of Microsoft. At the time Ballmer was the CEO of the company, Microsoft saw a huge surge in the profits and annual revenues of the company. Ballmer became one of the most successful CEO, and his performance made him top the list of the most efficient CEOs of all time.

Ballmer as the CEO of Microsoft started various new businesses and introduced the competitor of Sony Play Station, i.e., the Xbox, to the world. He also created the most powerful services, under the name of Microsoft, such as Exchange, Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, System Center, and Dynamics CRM. Also, he led the many beneficial acquisitions of his time including Skype.

By the end of 2012, few of Ballmer’s decisions, as the CEO of the company, resulted in bad backfires, resulting in criticism. In fact, he was named one of the worst CEO’s by the BBC, in 2013. Even with the criticism, he was able to accomplish the major acquisition as CEO for Microsoft, by acquiring the Nokia’s mobile phone division, in September 2013. On 4 February 2014, Ballmer retired as the CEO of Microsoft and also resigned from the Board of Directors of Microsoft, on 19 August 2014.

Personal Life

Ballmer is married to Connie Snyder, since 1990. He along with his wife and three sons live in Hunts Point, Washington. After retiring from Microsoft, he purchased the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers in a bid of $2 billion, on 29 May 2014. He is also in philanthropy, and donated $50 million to the University of Oregon, in 2014 and US$1 million the Jewish National Fund, becoming a member of its Chairman’s Council.
