Nvidia and Microsoft Collaborate To Build AI Supercomputers

Nvidia and Microsoft are working together over a “multi-year collaboration” to build “one of the most powerful AI supercomputer in the world,” which will be capable of handling the large processing workloads needed to teach and scale AI.

According to the reports, the AI supercomputer will be driven by Microsoft Azure’s cutting-edge supercomputing technology along with Nvidia GPUs, networking, and a comprehensive stack of AI software to support businesses in training, deploying, and scaling AI, including big, cutting-edge models. 

NVIDIA’s A100 and H100 GPUs will be part of the array, coupled with their Quantum-2 400Gb/s Infiniband networking technology. In particular, this would be the first public cloud to feature NVIDIA’s cutting-edge AI tech stack, allowing businesses to train and use AI on a large scale.

Manuvir Das, VP of enterprise computing at Nvidia, noted, “AI technology advances as well as industry adoption are accelerating. The breakthrough of foundation models has triggered a tidal wave of research, fostered new startups and enabled new enterprise applications. Our collaboration with Microsoft will provide researchers and companies with state-of-the-art AI infrastructure and software to capitalise on the transformative power of AI.”

NVIDIA will work with Azure to research and accelerate advancements in generative AI, a rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence where foundational models like the Megatron Turing NLG 530B serve as the basis for unmonitored, self-learning algorithms to generate new text, digital images, codes, audio, or video.

Additionally, the companies will work together to improve Microsoft’s DeepSpeed deep learning optimization tool. Azure enterprise clients will have access to NVIDIA’s full suite of AI processes and software development tools that have been tailored for Azure. In order to speed up transformer-based models used for huge language models, generative AI, and generating code, among other uses, Microsoft DeepSpeed will make use of the NVIDIA H100 Transformer Engine.

With twice the capacity of 16-bit operations, this technology uses DeepSpeed’s 8-bit floating point accuracy capabilities to significantly speed up AI calculations for transformers.

Verge reports that due to the recent quick expansion of these AI models, there has been a major increase in the demand for robust computer infrastructure.

The partnership is intriguing for several reasons, but notably, because it makes one of the largest computing clusters accessible to companies. Due to optimizations made in the newest ‘Hopper’ generation of NVIDIA GPUs, this will not only enable companies to train and implement AI at a level that was previously impractically pricey to do but also allow them to do it at a significant level of efficiency.

Although NVIDIA has a supercomputer of its own, the collaboration demonstrates that they are aware of the enormous computational demands placed on them by contemporary algorithms. This development represents a collaboration between two of the largest organizations in the AI industry.

Microsoft has experience in this area, as seen by its relationship with OpenAI and dedication to the development of ethical and safe AI. Netflix Announces “Stranger Things” VR Game for 2023

The fourth season of Stranger Things will be the basis for a virtual reality (VR) game being developed by Netflix and Tender Claws. As per Netflix, the VR game will launch on all leading VR platforms by the winter of 2023.

Stranger Things is without a doubt the most watched TV program on Netflix ever because of its mind-blowing plot, nostalgic 1980s atmosphere, and breathtaking cinematography. Despite the TV show’s overwhelming praise, its IP has not yet been diversified into other platforms, till Netflix recently revealed that a Stranger Things VR game is currently being developed by Tender Claws Studio and will be accessible on all mainstream VR platforms in 2023.

The new Stranger Things VR was unveiled during the Stranger Things Day 2022 celebrations with a brief teaser that included the grandfather clock ticking, demogorgons, and even a cameo by Eleven. Netflix ended the Stranger Things Day 2022 by tweeting the name of the first episode i.e THE CRAWL of Season 5 of “Stranger Things.”

In order to wreak vengeance on Eleven and Hawkins, the gamers will be able to enter their brains and inflict nightmares. In the game, the players will play as Vecna, the villain in Stranger Things Season 4 and the upcoming Season 5. Netflix noted, “Play as Vecna in this new Stranger Things adventure in VR. Become an explorer of unknown realities as you form the hive mind and tame the void. Invade minds and conjure nightmares in your quest to enact revenge on Eleven and Hawkins.”

A preview of the game that Netflix has posted on YouTube suggests that it is a psychological action/horror game. The brief video teaser also demonstrates gameplay and the visual design of the game. Studio Tender Claws has earlier worked on games like The Under Presents: Tempest, George in the Tub, and Tender: Creature Comforts.

The Netflix original series “Stranger Things” is set in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins. The story revolves around Hawkins’ US Department of Energy research facility conducting paranormal and otherworldly studies. During the same time that the institute abducts people to use in its experiments, a test subject named “Eleven” escapes the lab.

According to marketing company Nielsen, Stranger Things’ fourth season, which debuted on May 27, 2022, received 7.2 billion views between May and June. Variety reported that no other show has received more than 6 billion views in a single week. The prior front-runners Ozark and Tiger King only reached 5 billion in 2020. The fourth season of the show premiered with seven episodes in May, followed by two extended episodes in July.

Netflix has recently established its very own internal development studio, the fourth to join the Netflix family, marking a significant expansion in the video game industry. It will have its main office in Finland, and be in charge of developing unique new experiences for subscribers. As a publisher, Netflix’s Stranger Things VR will be the first title to not be released exclusively on smartphones, signaling the arrival on new platforms.

Chief executive officer of Nvidia corporation, Jensen Huang, released the company’s newest “Ada Lovelace” series of graphics chips on Tuesday, named for the 19th-century British mathematician who was regarded as an early innovator in the computer science field. There was also online streaming of the keynote speech.

Nvidia Chief Executive Officer, Jensen Huang, called the H100 processor the “engine” of AI infrastructure, said in a statement, “Data centres are becoming AI factories – processing and refining mountains of data to generate insight.”

Even though Nvidia corporation designs its graphic chips and its partners develop or manufacture them, Jensen Huang uncovered that the “4N” chip manufacturing technology utilized by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will be used to develop the chips. This will be a different approach or a departure from Samsung Electronics Corporation Limited which developed the previous gen of flagship gaming chips of Nvidia.

Artificial intelligence is used in the latest Lovelace chips for the advancement of video game graphics. By using these Lovelace chips, it is now easy to generate any game’s entire frame using Artificial intelligence.

Matt Wuebbling, vice president of worldwide GeForce marketing at Nvidia corporation, said in a media report that the Lovelace chip series will be available for sale all over the world and will not get affected by a new ban imposed by the U.S on trading Nvidia’s top data center artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China.

The chips will not consist of a so-called hash-rate limiter which is a technology Nvidia added in its previous gen of chips to limit their use in mining the Ethereum cryptocurrency because of the recent changes made in the tracking of the currency, Matt Wuebbling also stated.

Price and Availability

The GeForce RTX 4040, The predominant and most expensive version of the graphics chip, will be priced at 1599 USD and go on sale on 12th October 2022. Two RTX 4080 versions having lower initial prices will be available for purchase in November and will cost 899 USD and 1,199 USD, respectively.

Besides this, Nvidia also disclosed the Grace CPU super chip which is a new processing chip that complements the GPU chip and is based on Arm technology. It is claimed to be the first new Arm-based processor unveiled by Nvidia since the firm’s contract to acquire Arm limited fell through last month consisting of regulatory issues.

This Grace CPU Sperchip will be launched in the first half of next year and is said to be a bridge between two CPU chips that concentrate on AI and other activities demanding plenty of processor power.

Back in the 1940s

The new company was named Veeco Instruments and it completed an initial public offering in 1994. Veeco Instruments raised $27.5 million from the IPO. After it went public, Veeco acquired a series of companies including Ion Tech Inc through which it entered the optical coating market.

Veeco in the 21st century

In the new decade, the company’s first acquisition was Applied EPI, which is the current-day Molecular Beam Epitaxy group. This group currently maintains a leadership position in MBE technology worldwide. In 2003, Veeco acquired Emcore which helped the company start a business in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technologies. Thus, it entered the advanced LED, VCSEL, and photonics market. From 2007 to 2010, the company released several MOCVD and MBE compound semiconductor systems. The company also did heavy research in the ALD field for more than a decade and published several papers. 

In July 2007, Braun became the chairman of the board of Veeco whereas former president of JDSU’s Communications Test and Measurement Division, John Peeler joined the company as the new CEO. Next year, Veeco settled patent litigation that it brought against Asylum Research Corporation in 2003. In late 2010, Veeco decided to sell its metrology business to Bruker Corporation and the deal was settled for $229.4 million. After a couple of years, John Peeler became the new chairman of the company’s board. In 2014, Veeco acquired Solid State Equipment Co. which helped to expand its portfolio to solvent-based wet etch and clean technologies for semiconductors. In recent years, the company is focussing on the advanced packaging market, hence it decided to acquire Ultratech in 2017. Through this acquisition, it also acquired Cambridge Nanotech, a Boston-based company specializing in atomic layer deposition technology.

About The Founders

Ali Parsa is the founder of Babylon Health. He is a British-Iranian entrepreneur of Persian ethnicity. Parsa was born on 24 January 1965 in Rasht, Imperial State of Iran. He earned a bachelor’s civil and environmental engineering from University College London (UCL). At the university, Parsa also wrote for the student newspaper named Pi. In 1995, he completed a PhD in engineering in physics. While studying, Parsa co-founded his first company named Victoria & Gilan (V&G), and won the Royal Award for the Young Entrepreneur in 1993. He also worked as an investment banker at Credit Suisse First Boston. Apart from that, Parsa has also worked at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs. In 2004 Parsa founded Circle Health.
