Success Story of Dylan Field: A College Dropout who built a $20 billion Company Figma

Dylan Field is an American technology professional and co-founder of the internet-based vector graphics editing software startup Figma. In 2012, Field and Evan Wallace, whom he had met while studying computer science at Brown University, established Figma. Dylan Field was awarded a Thiel Fellowship in 2012, a $100,000 grant contingent upon his quitting school and starting a full-time job with the startup.

Wallace and Field relocated to San Francisco, where they worked together for four years to get the software ready for its initial general release in 2016. Field was included on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2015. According to estimates, he held 10% of Figma’s equity, which was worth $20 billion when Adobe acquired the company in 2022.

Early Life

Dylan Field was raised in Penngrove, California. His mother was a resources specialist educator at Thomas Page Elementary School, while his father was a respiratory specialist at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Field excelled at arithmetic as a child and began studying algebra at the age of six. From a young age, Field was fascinated by computer science and took part in FIRST Robotics.

Field completed his high school education at Technology High School, a STEM magnet school located on the Sonoma State University campus. Field created machines and websites for buddies in high school. Danah Boyd, a social media researcher with whom he collaborated, ended up writing one of Field’s recommendation letters for college.

Field joined Brown University in 2009 to study computer science there. Field was an active participant in Brown’s department of computer science. He co-chaired the department’s undergraduate group beginning in late 2011 and organized a hackathon in 2011 wherein 150 students took part.

In exchange for dedicating a break from college, Field received $100,000 after being selected as a Thiel Fellow in 2012. In 2011, the Thiel Fellowship program got going. The Thiel Fellowship was created at the time with the intention of choosing 20 “creative and driven young individuals” under the age of twenty each year. Each recipient received $100,000 to work on their proposals as start-up businesses during the two years they were out of college.

Together with Evan Wallace, who joined Dylan after earning his computer science degree that spring, Field co-founded Figma in the summer of 2012. Figma’s original goal was to make it possible for anyone to be creative by developing free, straightforward, in-browser tools. Before deciding on internet graphics editor software, Field and Wallace tested out several concepts, such as drone software and a meme generator.

The initial focus of the business was hazily defined as “a technology venture that will allow people to artistically express themselves online” in an opinion piece by The Brown Daily Herald. According to that article, the company’s initial concepts centered on the creation of 3D content, while later concepts emphasized photoshop work and object segmentation. Late in 2015, Figma released its initial beta version. Later that year, it made its first product available to the general public.

Figma raised venture capital in April 2020, valuing the corporation at $2 billion. Figma had already signed on Microsoft, GitHub, Airbnb, Square, Uber, and Zoom as clients. Adobe has updated Lightroom, Illustrator, and InDesign so that it can run seamlessly on Apple’s M1 processor and utilize its true power. Adobe claims that these apps have undergone third-party benchmark testing and now they will run 80 percent faster in Mac computers (M1 processor) as compared to Intel-based Apple laptops. All three apps of the Creative Cloud have received major updates and Adobe Lightroom has also been updated for other platforms as well. The new updates and the details for these Creative Cloud apps were shared in the Adobe blog on Monday. Both Adobe Lightroom and Lightroom Classic can utilize fully the power of Apple’s M1 SoC thus elevating user experience and getting work done smoothly. Pfeiffer Report conducted a benchmarking test according to which the app’s speed has doubled in the M1 processor as compared to Intel processor for Mac computers. The Super Resolution feature is working thrice the speed and back editing photos has become four times faster in this new Apple M1 processor. The other apps are also running way faster as compared to Intel-powered processors.

Lightroom now has a new feature called premium presets which are curated by professional photographers. The Lightroom presets are always in high demand especially for content creators as they want to make it look more “aesthetic” on social media. The new presets are divided into seven categories, namely, Portrait-Deep Skin, Portrait-Medium Skin, Portrait-Light Skin, Cinematic, Futuristic, Vintage, and Travel. The number of presets will keep increasing as the app will get updated. This new preset feature is not only for M1 users but also Windows, iOS, Android, and the Web. By bringing this new feature Adobe is making the photographer community as many people struggle with post-processing skills like color grading.

Lightroom has also launched a collaboration tool with the help of which users can allow other users to edit albums. In order to do so, one user has to send an invite so that other users can edit them in the shared album. Super-resolution is another great feature of Lightroom as it uses Artificial Intelligence to increase the resolution of an image. Apart from these, Lightroom has also added a feature of Tethered Live View for certain Nikon cameras.

With so many designers using Illustrator and InDesign for professional purposes, Adobe’s main goal was to optimize the performance and speed for these two apps. Users of M1 Mac have been using the Creative Cloud apps on their computers for a while, but with this new update, Adobe Illustrator speed has been increased by 65 percent in terms of performance. InDesign users will experience a 59 percent improvement in the overall performance of the app.

InDesign is mostly used to design layouts of print publications, magazines, eBooks, etc. Now, the users will experience lightning-fast speed when it comes to opening a file and working on it. According to Adobe, InDesign will open a graphics-heavy file with 185 times faster speed than it used to be and scrolling performance for text-heavy documents has been increased by 78 percent. With the launch of the adaptive version of Adobe Illustrator for the M1 processor, it will take less time to load files going through the workflow in a much easier way. For Illustrator, the scroll performance while working with complex vectors has been made 390 times faster, and opening a complex file with 31 artboards has been made 119 percent faster. Adobe has mentioned in the blog that the new releases will be available to everyone across the globe very soon. The professionals and new creators will experience better workflow, especially in this remote working system while keeping themselves more engaged.

Adobe announces the release of ARM version of Lightroom for Apple’s M1 and Windows 10

Yesterday, Adobe announced the release of the Arm version of the Lightroom app for both macOS and Windows 10. The new Lightroom version created especially for the M1 processors will take advantage of this processor leading to better productivity of the app. The Qualcomm powered Windows 10 is also compatible with running this app but only in those smartphones operating on ARM-based processors. The news became public via the blogpost of Adobe’s Photo Product Manager, Sharad Mangalick where he also mentions that the company intends to ship Apple M1 native versions as soon as they are ready. So, Adobe Lightroom will be available as a native app for the users of Apple’s M1 and Arm-based Windows 10, and also it is becoming a part of the Creative Suite installer.

In the blogpost by Sharad Mangalick, the news updates for the native app of Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Lightroom Classic are also mentioned. With the December updates, the users will now have the advantage of ProRAW format support. Once you take an image in the Apple ProRAW format you can import and edit those images in Lightroom. This applies to the desktop version as well. Adobe has also introduced new Lightroom widgets for iOS14 which will allow the users to quickly take photos and selfies using the Lightroom camera. The new widgets will allow the users to explore the Discover Edits and In-app tutorials from the Widget screen. In Lightroom iOS (iOS 14 and above), the users can drag these widgets onto the Home screen which will save some time and enable easy access.

There is also a free Lightroom starter plan for the desktop version of the software. This can be used by both Mac and Windows users but geographically limited to Australia and New Zealand. The new customers can start this free Lightroom starter plan, get used to the core Lightroom features, and continue to use without a subscription or trial limit. But, in general, this software can be downloaded for free but the trial period is only for one week. After one week, a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 has to be paid for continuing to use it. This subscription pack also includes 1TB cloud storage. Though the beta version of the app is already available for download, the Classic lovers have to wait for some time for a full rollout.

The biggest update of 2020

In 2020, Adobe Lightroom has introduced many new updates throughout the year. In February, Lightroom released Raw defaults for Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw followed by introducing Improved GPU support for the same. In June 2020, the software included the option of Share Edits, Local Hue color updates, Raw Defaults, and Watermarks for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android users. Share Edits is a very helpful option for all the budding photographers out there helping them to understand the edits. Many big photographers on social media have started sharing the Lightroom presets which is a great advantage for the content creators.

In October 2020, one of the best new features of Lightroom so far was added, that is, Advanced Color Grading in Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom. This feature allows much finer control producing even more sensational photographs than normal Split Tones. Apart from the Hue and Saturation control that already existed, the new color grading option gave broader tones for the users to experiment with. With the three new options of Luminance, Blending, and Balance the users get the best chance to change the mood of their photographs accordingly. The color effects produced by the advanced color grading are mostly used by the video editors.

The recent Beta version of Photoshop

Apart from the latest Lightroom updates, Adobe has also released the Beta version of Photoshop that runs on M1 Macs and ARM-based Windows PCs. The beta version undoubtedly has improved performance but features like the content-aware fill, patch tool, healing brush, etc are missing. This beta version was released in November, just a couple of weeks before the release of the native Lightroom app. But, the updates in Lightroom show that Adobe is improving the existing features continuously striving to optimize the software for Arm and M1 devices.
