Google Drops Plans to Build Cloud-Computing Service for China

China has been facing a lot of criticism in recent months for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several countries have openly called out the country for its relaxed stand, which led to the pandemic’s spread around the world. Certain countries are also now working on moving their manufacturing out of China. India too has decided to ban several Chinese apps due to border skirmishes between the two near the Nepal border. However, the most recent tech company to pull out of a Chinese partnership is none other than Google. Here’s a look at why the tech giant has abandoned plans to launch a cloud-computing platform for China.

Google Pulls Out

As per a report by Bloomberg, this will be the second project that Google scrapped with ties to China. In 2018, Google announced plans to build a search product name Dragonfly for China. However, amidst wide-spread criticism, the company dropped the high-profile project in December 2018. The new project, which goes by the codename Isolated Region, was to help countries with strict data laws, host cloud-computing services. The application would help such countries control the data flow within their borders. Therefore, the project was not a part of Google’s central cloud infrastructure but a different network. The plan was to help China oversee the flow of data across its borders while maintaining absolute privacy.

Second Time Unlucky

The product was Google’s second attempt at establishing a high-profile partnership with China. Sources are unsure of whether the completed project would have served as a replacement to G Suite. However, rumors regarding such a product first came out in 2018. As per Bloomberg, conversations began as China needed a cloud service that would help them maintain and ensure privacy standards for the flow of data within and outside the country. When tensions between the US and China rose in January 2019, the company momentarily paused the project’s development. Existing privacy concerns and Trump’s trade war plans with China halted the project for a few months, and Google moved its focus to Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Pulling the Plug

After the brief halt, Google pulled the plug on the project in May of this year. The reason for the same was partly due to the worsening of ties between the US and China, among other things. As per the company’s statement, the decision came as a result of input from stakeholders in Europe, and from around the world. Google also said that Isolated Region was one of the approaches they took to addressing the world’s cloud technology needs. Talks with other countries proved to them that their paths would be better-suited, leading to the scrapping of the initial plan. The company also stated that they do not offer cloud services within China, and had no plans to offer them in the near future.

Project Isolated Region

Project Isolated Region was not just to help countries with censoring laws, but to serve ones with strict privacy laws. Google also seems to have eyes on the European Union, which is known for its strong privacy policies. By providing insight over the flow and storage of data to government authorities, Google plans on establishing a service in an EU nation. The project would help solve issues regarding the 2018 American law, Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act. This law makes it harder for companies to deny government data reports when storing large volumes of data offshore. Since the cloud-computing project involved hundreds of employees from around the world, the plan to scrap it is a major shift in policy.

Google Cloud and VMware

Google Cloud to Add Support for VMware Workloads to Attract More Enterprise Customers

Google has just announced that it has joined its hands with the software company, VMware, to expand its cloud services. This way, Google will be able to court the enterprise users of VMware who will be able to run their workloads over Google Cloud.

Through the partnership, the two companies are planning to start a new hybrid cloud service called Google Cloud VMware Solution (developed by CloudSimple). The service will let the VMware enterprise customers use the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to run their vSphere-based workloads. The partnership will make Google provide its support for the VMware Cloud Foundation. The VMware Cloud Foundation is mainly responsible for deploying and running hybrid clouds.

VMware has got a long list of enterprise customers, and it would be great for Google if it bags them for its hybrid cloud service. Though Google is a long-time rival for VMware and many of the enterprises won’t be moving to GCP, there are many who themselves had requested Google to provide support for VMware cloud over its cloud service. Migrating the VMware workloads to a VMware software-defined data centre (SDCC) running in GCP, will render the organisations to have full, native access to the complete VMware services, i.e. vCenter, vSAN and NSX-T.

Google Cloud and VMware

“Customers have asked us to provide broad support for VMware, and now with Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSimple, our customers will be able to run VMware vSphere-based workloads in GCP. This brings customers a wide breadth of choices for how to run their VMware workloads in a hybrid deployment, from modern containerized applications with Anthos to VM-based applications with VMware in GCP.” said Google in the announcement.

Google is moving forward towards internet-based computing and storage, and it is estimated that the company may raise its cloud business to $8 billion this year. The partnership is also going to add up some more to the annual revenue of the company. Where its rival companies like Alphabet Inc. has already been in such deals, Google has just started on this way.

“Our partnership with Google Cloud has always been about addressing customers’ needs, and we’re excited to extend the partnership to enable our mutual customers to run VMware workloads on VMware Cloud Foundation in Google Cloud Platform. With VMware on GCP, customers will be able to leverage all of the familiarity and investment protection of VMware tools and training as they execute on their cloud strategies, and rapidly bring new services to market and operate them seamlessly and more securely across a hybrid cloud environment.” VMware’s Sanjay Poonen said in a statement.

VMware is not new to such partnerships and has recently partnered with Microsoft and formed the Azure VMware Solutions, which is again developed by CloudSimple. In 2016, the company had also joined its hands with Amazon in order to integrate the cloud services from both the companies altogether.

The company has revised the prices of its Pus plan, increasing the storage capacity to 2TB of storage, up from 1TB. The price for the Plus plan will now be $12 per month from its previous $10. Dropbox has also added new features, like Dropbox Smart Sync and Dropbox Rewind to all its subscription plans. Dropbox Smart Sync feature will look for the items in the hard drive that have been idle for a long time and mark them as online-only. This way, it will move the out of date items from the hard drive and make space for the new stuff.

On the other hand, the Rewind feature will help the users to roll back some of its actions like deletion of some important data and the accidental edits done in the past 30 days. Along with those two features, Dropbox will be bringing the full-text search for the Plus users. The subscribers who will pay annually will get a $2 discount on the subscription fee.

For the Professional plan, the storage has been increased to 3TB from 2TB at the old price $19.99 per month. And like before, the price of the one-month subscription will remain $16.58 if paid annually. Both Smart Sync and the Rewind feature are enabled for this plan too, the latter being able to work for the past 180 days. The Professional plan subscribers will also get access to the watermarking tool, such that they can use the same to protect their work from being copied.

The price for the Business plan is also the same, but the storage has been increased from 3TB to 5TB. The plan will include the discussed features, and the 120-day version history has also been upgraded to 180-days version history for the subscribers.

The storage capacity for the Dropbox subscription plans has been increased for every subscriber. For the old subscribers, too, the storage has been increased immediately. For them, the plan price will remain the same until their subscription ends, and they subscribe for the new cycle. The new subscribers will need to pay the increased price for the Plus plan.
