Truecaller adds support for video calling and e-payments

Truecaller, the Sweden-based startup, is quite popular among smartphone users as an alternative to their boring default dialer app. The ability to identify and filter out spam calls makes it the first choice for million of smartphone users worldwide. On Tuesday, at its first annual ‘Stay Ahead’ event in Delhi, Truecaller announced its intention of transforming the brand from a service oriented app to a platform by launching its completely redesigned Android App- Truecaller 8.

At the event, company representatives openly spoke about their future goals highlighting their partnership with Google and ICICI, an Indian Bank in order to integrate video calling and e-payment functionality into new Truecaller app. Alongside these tie-ins, Trucaller decided to integrate its True messenger app with their dialer to bring spam free messaging functionality to its customers.

According to Alan Mamedi, chief executive officer and co-founder, Truecaller: “Spam SMS account for 15% of all SMS messages sent globally, and represents 1.2 trillion spam messages each year. On average, every spam call is about 40 seconds long, so we will help save a lot of time.” On top of it, now users can send flash messages-from a pre-written text library-in just 2 steps. This will be extremely helpful in situations when you are busy or stuck somewhere; just in 2 seconds you can send a flash message to inform someone.

Truecaller Pay is an addition to the list of features as a result of their partnership with ICICI in India. This allows Truecaller India users to send and receive money electronically via their android smartphones. ICICI Bank is providing the technology required to for such services.

“This is based on the feedback received from the market that users wanted to be able to make a transaction straight from their Truecaller app”, said Nami Zarringhalam, CSO and co-founder Truecaller.

The company also tied up with Google to integrate Google Duo, a video calling service, with the app itself. This functionality will be available in next few months for both Android and iOS users. According to Google, the deal aligns with their aim to make video calling simpler, faster and available to everyone.

Truecaller has also launched extended the caller identification for Indian subscribers of telecom operator Airtel where even people with feature phones would be able to use caller ID feature some other features. Airtel’s non-data users will also be able to identify spam calls with this new feature informing them by a flash message prior to the call. This unique way of extending services allows users to get online experience without subscribing to a data pack or buying a smartphone.

Truecaller is not the only company attacking e-payment opportunity in India. In his last visit to India, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton revealed his plans to tap into commercial messaging and digital payment whenever it’s the right time. Hike is another major player in the game with a strong focus on improving quality messaging supplemented with support of regular news, games and stickers.

Hyperloop to cut 6 hours journey to 30 minutes by 2019

Hyperloop is a futuristic transportation technology, proposed by tech billionaire Elon Musk that will use reduced pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on an air cushion. Known as the fifth mode of transportation, Hyperloop showed its mettle in the north of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert.

The first public open air test in the Nevada desert on Wednesday lasted for only about two seconds but gave a spine chilling experience to the audiences. Fifteen hundred pounds of aluminum reached 120 mph in just 1.5 seconds, accelerating to 300 mph before it hitting the sand. Now transportation of people and goods inexpensively and safely at lightning speed is no more a dream.

The company which is vying to turn the idea into reality was established in 2014 as Hyperloop Technologies, Inc. and re-branded in 2016 as Hyperloop One. Hyperloop One got $37 million in funding to build the test track. A recent round of $80 million included France’s railway system SNCF.

If things go in the right direction then, Hyperloop would be able to work by propelling pods at high speeds through a tube, which in theory would be able to make the journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles in just 30 minutes.

The Hyperloop is essentially a futuristic train that Musk calls “a cross between a Concorde, a rail-gun and an air hockey table”. This speed was never thought to be possible but soon it would be.

Rob Lloyd, CEO of Hyperloop One, said in a statement:

“We will work alongside these world-class partners to redefine the future of transportation, providing a more immediate, safe, efficient and sustainable high-speed backbone for the movement of people and things.”

Hyperloop recently announced partnerships with governments and investors. Hyperloop one is trying to master the above ground routes first and then underwater routes. Hyperloop would be able to solve the most complex transportation issues faced nowadays. Though critics have reservation related to the travel experience of humans being packed in tubes, Hyperloop is surely the future of transportation.

From the successful Nevada test, one message is loud and clear that the age of Hyperloop has arrived!

WhatsApp on Desktop: What You Can and Can’t Do With it?

Checking WhatsApp messages at work, without peeking into your phones every now and then away from the prying eyes of the bosses, is easily possible thanks to the launch of WhatsApp Web: the desktop version of the popular mobile-messaging app.

“Today, for the first time, millions of you will have the ability to use WhatsApp on your web browser,” read the announcement on company’s blog much to the elation of millions who are most of the time working on the desktop for work and other purposes.

Before you jump to install the desktop app, you should know the strengths and limitations of the app. The web client currently supports Google Chrome browser only and works with Android, Windows Phone or Blackberry device (not iPhone).

To Install WhatsApp on Desktop, all you need to do is open https://web.whatsapp.com in your Google Chrome browser and scan the QR code that you see there inside of WhatsApp on your mobile phone. The new service will be launched on your desktop and you can freely chat with your friends and colleagues on your desktop.

Points to be kept in mind

The first thought that might have come to many minds after hearing the announcement was- Can I now use WhatsApp only on desktop, independent of mobile phone. Sorry, that isn’t the case.

Your phone has to stay connected to Internet. The two devices- mobile and desktop- are paired. So, if by any chance you lose the internet connection on your mobile phone or switch it off, the desktop version will shut down as well.

Secondly, you have to ensure you are using the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone in order to use the web client.

What You Can Do With WhatsApp Desktop Version

Send and Receive Messages on Desktop: Since the web client is an extension of your phone, you can easily chat with your friends on desktop. All the messages between your smartphone and desktop are synced. Which means all messages sent and received on desktop are automatically available in your mobile phone too.

Chat with your colleagues: If your colleagues are on your WhatsApp too, you can quickly exchange messages or any other work related information with them via WhatsApp web client. That way, WhatsApp can promote productivity at workplace too!

Participate in Running Group Chats: You can chat in the groups that were started on your mobile.

What You Can’t Do With WhatsApp Desktop Version

  1.  Can’t use it on your iPhone: The service doesn’t work with iPhone at present. WhatsApp gave the following reason for the same on its blog, “Unfortunately for now, we will not be able to provide web client to our iOS users due to Apple platform limitations.” We guess iPhone users have to wait a little for the service since they plan to support this in coming time. For the time being, users have to keep checking their mobile phones to check every message you get on WhatsApp. Just make sure you don’t do that too often at work; it doesn’t cast a good impression.
  1.  Can’t use it on Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.: As we told you in beginning itself, the service works on Google Chrome only at present. Surprisingly, Google’s own product- Google Hangouts will now suffer with WhatsApp latest release since Hangouts were most commonly being used to exchange messages at workplace.
  1.  Can’t use independently of your mobile phone: Like we said before, your mobile phone needs to stay connected to internet in order to use the service on your desktop.
  1.   Can’t create new groups, leave old ones or block users: WhatsApp users can’t create a new group using the desktop version. Neither can you leave old ones. To block users spamming you, you have to use your mobile phone too.

This was a long awaited feature since other messaging platforms like Facebook, Google Hangouts and Wickr already synced messages between smartphone and computer. Other popular mobile messaging apps, including Line, WeChat, iMessage, Viber, etc. also already had desktop versions. Over 700 million users use WhatsApp and the desktop version will expand the use of this platform. It only gets better for WhatsApp with each passing day. Give WhatsApp Web a try and tell us how you like it.

With Rotimatic you can have perfect Rotis and that too with the speed of one Roti per minute. Not anymore with Dynamic Embed.”
