Nest Wi-Fi Pro

Google to release Nest Wi-Fi Pro update next week to fix slow internet speed

Google will launch a software upgrade for the brand-new Nest Wi-fi Pro close to the start of the next week to resolve some users’ slow Internet speeds.

Google unveiled its newest IoT products, such as the Nest Wifi Pro, on October 4. The model looks hardly anything like most Wi-Fi routers and costs 200 USD, but it may be valuable for those who are committed to the Nest ecosystem and want a mesh networking setup. Why? The model includes Wi-Fi 6E, which expands on 802.11ax connectivity to provide customers with access to the 6 GHz band. As a matter of fact, the device is evidently future-proof and performs better.

Sanjay Noronha, Google Nest Wifi’s product lead said that “the company is currently investigating reports of a small number of users experiencing reduced Internet speeds on Nest Wifi Pro routers, and that its teams are working to roll out a fix,” as reported by The Verge.

Considering the combo of performance assurances and high price tag, it is not surprising that some customers were dissatisfied when they discovered a bug that in some cases, was restricting the Nest Wifi Pro to speeds of only around 50 Mbps.

It is noticeably slower than what one might anticipate out of a Wi-Fi 6E device which in actuality, for so many customers, may have signified a dramatic drop compared to the hardware they were using before purchasing Google’s. Luckily, it appears that the firm has heard the complaints and is hard at work on a bug fix.

Not every Nest Wifi Pro owner has reported slow internet speed issues. Google told The Verge that this issue affected only a small percentage of its users. The spokesperson said that Google is working on a bug fix for the issue and that it will begin the launch to consumers close to the start of the next week that means Monday is unclear, but it appears to be only a matter of days away.

According to the statement provided to The Verge, it appears that users in the United Kingdom were more likely to be affected by this glitch than consumers in the United States. That reason for the bug might well be connected to point-to-point protocol over ethernet (PPPoE). It is generally used by DSL service providers in the United Kingdom and DSL is still accessible in many other places, and those users may also be affected.

Google did not go into detail about why these slow speed issues are occurring, allowing the reader to presume what they can, from the information given. In the meantime, if you’ve a non-Pro Google Nest Wi-fi mesh network router and are undergoing slow speeds, the firm has an assistance document outlining possible solutions.

Google One

Google One VPN Service Now Available on Windows and Mac

Google One subscribers who are utilizing the Premium Plan or higher, are granted access to the firm’s own VPN service without any cost.  Up until recently, the service was only available on Android and iOS devices, but Google is now making it available to desktop users as well. This means that if a user purchases a 2TB or higher plan, then VPN by Google One will be added automatically and without any additional charge.

Google One VPN support has been brought for Mac and Windows devices and it was confirmed by the company. It is now available in 22 countries around the world, enabling the users to mask their IP addresses and restrict trackers.

“We remain committed to a high degree of transparency and verifiability of our privacy and security guarantees. We have recently completed an extension of this audit to cover the desktop implementations for Windows and macOS,” the company was quoted as saying.

The desktop version necessitates a minimum of macOS Big Sur or Windows 10. The Mac app supports both x86 and ARM users, whereas the Windows app does not support 32-bit or ARM-based systems.

It’s worth noting that, unlike most of the premium VPN services on the market, Google One’s VPN does not permit users to modify their location in order to access or unlock media content from other regions on streaming platforms. The Google One VPN, like Apple’s iCloud Plus VPN, automatically assigns an IP address within the area from which the user connects.

Google’s VPN service is also audited by third-party organizations. To ensure transparency, the firm also showcases the source code for its app libraries. The search engine behemoth has revealed that the desktop app audit will be publicly disclosed in the upcoming week time.

Google began offering their VPN service for free to Google One subscriber having a 2TB plan in the United States in 2020, but the firm has since decided to expand this free offering to 22 marketplaces, including Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, among others.

US seizes over 50K Bitcoin worth $3.3 bn stored in a popcorn tin

The US Justice Department revealed Monday that it seized approximately 3.36 billion USD in stolen Bitcoin throughout an impromptu 2021 raid on James Zhong’s residence.

Zhong pled guilty to one count of wire fraud on Friday and it carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

According to the DOJ, on Nov. 9, 2021, US authorities seized approximately 50,676 Bitcoin, which was then valued at more than 3.36 billion USD, from Zhong throughout a search of his residence in Gainesville, Georgia.

It is the DOJ’s second-largest financial seizure to date, following its February unveiling of 3.6 billion USD in illegally obtained cryptocurrency connected to the 2016 hack of the crypto exchange Bitfinex.

Authorities claim Zhong robbed Bitcoin out of the illegal Silk Road marketplace, a dark web forum where drugs and other illegal goods were bought and sold with cryptocurrency. Silk Road was established in 2011, but it was shut down by the FBI (the Federal Bureau of Investigation) in 2013. Ross William Ulbricht, its founder, is currently serving his life sentence in a jail cell.

“For almost ten years, the whereabouts of this massive chunk of missing Bitcoin had ballooned into an over $3.3 billion mystery,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated a press release.

As reported by the Southern District, New York, Zhong used vulnerabilities in the marketplace to carry out the hack.

Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Special Agent in charge, Tyler Hatcher stated that Zhong used a sophisticated scheme to seize the stolen Bitcoin from Silk Road. Following the press release, Zhong generated nine fraudulent Silk Road accounts in September 2012, financing each with between 200 Bitcoin and 2,000 Bitcoin.

He then executed over 140 transactions in quick succession, fooling the marketplace’s withdrawal-processing system into releasing roughly 50,000 Bitcoin into his accounts. Zhong then deposited the Bitcoin to several wallet addresses that he controlled.

Law enforcement and blockchain analytic experts were able to recover more than 50,000 stolen Bitcoin from Zhong through blockchain assessment and good old-fashioned police work. Based on the press release, they even discovered crypto stored on a computer buried beneath blankets found in a popcorn tin placed in a bathroom closet.

According to public records, Zhong was the CEO and president of a self-made firm, JZ Capital LLC, which he enrolled in Georgia in 2014. As per his LinkedIn profile, his job there was focused on investments and venture capital.

His profile also states that he was a large early Bitcoin investor with deep experience and knowledge of its inner workings and also, that he had experience in software development in various coding languages.

Pictures of Zhong on yachts, in front of aircraft, and at high-profile football matches can be found on his social media profiles.

However, such types of cheats did not stop with the demise of the Silk Road. Criminals continue to target cryptocurrency platforms.

Binance, the nation’s biggest crypto exchange calculated by trading volume, was hacked for $570 million in October 2022. According to the company, hackers were able to exploit a cross-chain bridge, BSC Token Hub, due to a bug in a smart contract. As a result, the cybercriminals withdrew BNB tokens, the platform’s native cryptocurrency.

A different hacker discovered vulnerabilities in the decentralised finance platform Ronin Network in March 2022 and stole more than 600 million USD and became the largest hack to date. Private keys were compromised which act as passwords to secure cryptocurrency funds in wallets.

According to a Chainalysis report, through July 2022, $1.9 billion in cryptocurrency had been stolen in service hacks, compared to just below 1.2 billion USD at the same point in 2021.

Twitter To Let Users Post Long-Form Tweets and help creators monetize

Elon Musk intends to allow Twitter users to earn more money from all types of content, potentially providing a more favorable deal than YouTube’s monetization model, as well as allowing people to make Long-Form Tweets, lengthier posts and videos.

This weekend, Twitter’s new buyer, Musk, hinted about the latest features in tweets. Musk responded to influencer Quinn Nelson’s tweet that YouTube “gives creators 55% of ad revenue,” saying, “We can beat that.”

Previously, a content creator stated that if given the right incentives, he would consider posting his full-length and long videos to Twitter.

“If twitter could handle the full length feature videos that I produce and can offer a similar monetization system like YouTube does, I would consider uploading my full videos here too for sure,” wrote user @Erdayastronaut, whose Twitter profile reads: “Professional rocket orientation specialist, explainer of flamey stuff and rocket chaser.”

Musk replied, “We can do 42 min chunks at 1080 resolution now for new Blue, so you could break up a longer video. The 42 min limit should be fixed next month.”

Further details on monetization will be revealed in the coming weeks, according to Musk.

He also stated that Twitter will soon allow users to post long-form tweets which will put an end to the idiocy of notepad screenshots which will be followed by composer monetization for every type of content including videos and paragraphs, he further added.

On Saturday, he promised to offer an improved search function on Twitter saying that the search function reminds him of Infoseek in 1998.

When another user complained, “I have hundreds of videos…. But I’d need to reencode them since twitter is extraordinarily picky about formats,” Musk replied, “Noted to fix.” Then He set his Twitter bio as “Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator.”

Twitter declared plans for a monthly $7.99 subscription service on Saturday, allowing anyone on Twitter to get a checkmark similar to the celebrities, industries, and political elites you already follow. According to the New York Times, Twitter is postponing this offer due to concerns that it will be abused.

Twitter also announced an impending premium feature that will allow users to have their tweets prioritized over those from accounts that do not have the blue check.

WhatsApp has been working on Communities, a significant update to how users will be able to interact on WhatsApp in groups that are important to them.

Communities such as neighbourhoods, school parents, and workplaces can now connect multiple groups under one umbrella to arrange group chats on WhatsApp.

To get started, Android phone users can click on the latest communities tab located at the top of their chats and iOS users can click on the bottom.

They will now be able to create new Communities from scratch or join existing ones.

Users can effortlessly switch among available groups once in a community to get the information they need, when they need it, and administrators can send important updates to all the members of the Community.

WhatsApp Communities aims to raise the bar for how organisations communicate by providing a level of security and privacy which is not found anywhere else.

Other features such as in-chat polls, 32-person video calling, and groups with up to 1,024 participants can be used in any group but will be especially useful in Communities.

The company has been collaborating with about 50 organizations in 15 countries to develop Communities to cater to their needs, and the feedback so far indicates that these software inventions are assisting groups like these in better organising and achieving their goals.
