SAP SE – Inspiring Journey of the Company That Emerged Out Of Rejection

It’s a tough task to manage the financials, logistics, HR and other business areas without the help of technological tools, especially for bigger companies. Such tools bring accuracy as well as transparency in the organization. The combination of various business processes is achieved through it. One of such Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is SAP SE.

SAP SE journey – a very basic version of the most celebrated software as per fortune 500 companies

In 1971, Xerox left the hardware manufacturing sector and asked IBM to shift its business systems to IBM technologies. That time five IBM engineers from the AI department were working on enterprise-wide systems based on the software to which IBM has given rights to, Scientific data systems (SDS) /SAPE software. They were told that the project they are working on is not of use. That time, they decided to leave IBM and start their own company.

So, in 1972, those 5 engineers – Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Hans-Werner Hector, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther founded SAP SE. currently, their headquarter is located in Walldorf, Germany and regional offices all over the world in 170 plus countries with more than 425000 customers.

Further Exploration of SAP SE

In the beginning, they developed programs for payroll and office for their first client Imperial chemical industries. Their software was real-time, unlike IBM.

In 1973, they moved to a commercial product which was their first financial accounting system. (SAP R/1) It has centralized data storage and improved data maintenance. In 1979, SAP involved other areas like material management & production planning. (SAP R/2). This SAP R/2 version did not improve until 1990.  SAP R/3 was released in 1992 and was developed with new features in 1995.

By this time, it already achieved the mainframe computing trend and the concept of business process integration came into the picture. To accommodate all these changes, SAP R/3 was replaced with SAP ERP central component in 2004. The latest version is of 2016, SAP ERP 6.0. Till 2016, SAP was the world’s third-largest software and programming company. As per recent reports, it is on number one. Most of the fortune 500 companies use this software.

The five founders have different stories before they were in IBM and have different journeys with SAP. Let’s have a short introduction to the life of masterminds behind SAP SE.

Dietmar Hopp

Starting with Dietmar Hopp, who grew up in Hoffenheim. He was a telecommunications engineering student and after that, he joined as a consultant at IBM. Then SAP was founded, and he was the CEO of SAP SE from 1988 until 1998, chairman of its supervisory board from 1998 until 2003 and member of the board from 2003 until 2005. When he left the board, he kept 10% of the company’s shares.

Hasso Plattner

Plattner has received many awards and recognitions for his commitment to economics and science ranging from Leadership Award for Global Integration to the “technology guru”. He was also estimated to be worth US$10.8 billion by Forbes in 2016.

Klaus Tschira

He got his Diploma in physics and worked at IBM before he founded this company, for which he was a board member From 1998 to 2007. He passed away on 31 March 2015 in Heidelberg. As well, he was a recipient of many honors in his lifetime including several doctorates.

Claus Wellenreuther

Wellenreuther studied business administration at the University of Manheim in operational research. He left the business in 1980 due to his health condition and got compensation of 1 million DM.

Hector

One of the founders, Hector, A trained mathematician successfully built up the North American market for SAP. Later, he was separated from the company in 1997 after a falling out with his partners.

CEO till 2019 – William R. “Bill” McDermott

Formerly William R. “Bill” McDermott was the CEO of SAP who is currently CEO of ServiceNow.  While he was the co-CEO and CEO, SAP’s market value increased from $39 billion to $156 billion. McDermott went to North-western University’s Kellogg School of Management where he earned his MBA. He joined SAP in 2002 as CEO and was designated to the SAP Executive Board in 2008. He did various roles in SAP.  On October 10, 2019, McDermott decided to leave SAP SE. In 2016, McDermott was named “Manager of the Year” by the German Business Daily. He also received the award as TOP CEO by Glassdoor.

Current Co-CEOs – Christian Klein & Jennifer Morgan

Presently, the duo Klein-Morgan handling the CEO position of the firm. Starting from Jennifer Morgan, she joined this company back in 2004. After serving for a long time, in 2017, she appointed in SAP’s Executive Board. However, she became the first female in America that first-ever appointed to the Executive Board. While Klein, the Co-CEO joined the company in 1999 as an intern. Thereafter serving at several positions he named as a CEO along with Jennifer.

AddressHealth: The Journey Of Anand Lakshman To Create A One-Stop-Shop For Pediatric Healthcare

Children are the future of any country because they are going to participate in the development of the country. However, children should be healthy in their early stages of growth. Because it determines their mental and physical development. Also, it is the utmost requirement to have healthy and intelligent youths to build the nation. In India, almost 27% of the population has consisted of children up to 12 years of age. But India is facing several health challenges every day. Especially, related to the child’s health. And yet, most of the child health issues are unaddressed. The reason behind this is considered to be the lack of healthcare providers and pediatricians. However, the AddressHealth came forward to provide the best healthcare service to the children. In 2010, Dr. Anand Laxman set up AdressHealth to serve society. 

Backstory

In India, the various healthcare areas are fragmented from each other. Like dental health, nutrition and vision, etc. are rarely found in one place. Since these areas isolated, most people don’t take their children for all types of a medical check-ups. But two young doctors, Anand Lakshman and his fried A. Radhakrishnan took a big step to change this scenario. They always wanted to do something to ensure that every child attains a positive health state. Thus, Anand with his friend founded AddressHealth in 2010. 

Presently, this company is the largest school health provider in India. Also, it is recognized as India’s first one-stop-shop for Primary Paediatric Healthcare. It is a Bengaluru based start-up that is a pioneer in children’s primary healthcare services.

After one year of formation, the company launched the School health program. Earlier, it started in six schools covering health check-ups of about 4000 children. Basically, the program is an initiative to check the complete health of students. Under this program, they check vision, hearing ability, teeth, etc. In fact, it’s a complete medical examination of students from head-to-toe.

In addition, they have designed a curriculum for the student of class 1st to 5. This curriculum covers contents related to healthy behavior as per the age of students. Also, it provides information related to physical and mental behavior changes during the formative age. Presently, AddressHealth successfully providing this program in about 250 schools.

Anand Lakshman

He is the co-founder of Addresshealth also, the current CEO of the company. After long service in the government’s public health program, he plunged into entrepreneurship in 2010. 

Education and Career

Anand went to Kendriya Vidyalaya for his secondary education. Thereafter, he completed M.B.B.S in medicine from Mysore medical college. Also, he attended the Tata institute of social science for post-graduation in Public Health Management. However, after that, he worked for several years on the public health program. During his career, he also worked in Micronutrient initiative. As well, served as an RNTCP medical consultant for the World Health Organization.

Anoop Radhakrishnan

He is a doctor turned entrepreneur to set up a new generation healthcare project. After graduating from IIM-Lucknow, Anoop set up consultancy familiar as IndigoEdge. But being a doctor, he always wanted to serve in his field. Therefore, he joined Anand to set up Addresshealth in 2010.  

Successes of AddressHealth

AddressHealth rise as a first Indian one-shop stop for primary child healthcare providers. In fact, the company is a pioneer in this field. Today, with its School health program, the company became the largest school health provider. Also, they run several Child Speciality Clinics. Recently, the company successfully completed 10 years of excellent healthcare service. However, it is conducting several projects for the complete medical examination of students from head-to-toe. The company’s School health program is aimed to increase school coverage in the future.

Feedburner

FeedBurner – Product of The Brilliant Idea of Four Tech Geeks

At the beginning of the 21st century, dot com boom in the world and massive websites were launched for the first time. In that scenario, a group of four people grab the opportunity and set up FeedBurner. It was a powerful idea to enhance the operationality of the website. 

Feedburner was their second company to hit in the tech world. At that time, RSS was just started to gain some real momentum. In such a situation, they launched the Feedburner at an impeccable timing. After that, the company achieved success in a very short period. 

Backstory of FeedBurner

It is a web feed management provider based in Chicago. In 2004, a group of four people launched the service. Soon it became popular among publishers and bloggers. It is the product of a brilliant idea of the four brilliant minds, who were working at Andersen consulting. 

They noticed that the web is the future of networking. They proposed the idea of feed management services to the firm they were working with. But their idea was uninterested in Andersen consulting. Therefore, they launched own successful services in the website tracking. FeedBurner was one of their popular services. It is launched back in 2004 by Dick Costolo, Steve Olechowski, Eric Lunt, and Matt Shobe.

Dick Costolo

Dick Costolo was the co-founder and CEO of FeedBurner till 2007. After Google acquired the Feedburner, he served as Group Product Manager on the Ads up to 2009. From 2010 to 2015 he served as a CEO at twitter. 

Personal Life

He was born on September 10, 1963. In 1985, Costolo attended the University of Michigan for his graduation in communication & computer science. During his senior year, he did several plays as a theatre artist. He wanted to work in improvisational comedy. So, after graduation, he rejected many job offers in the technical field. 

However, he joined Andersen Consulting and severed for as long as 8 years. That time, he co-founded a web design company, known as Burning Door Networked Media. Just before the FeedBurner foundation, Costolo also co-founded SypOnIt. 

Later Achievements

He served at National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee in 2011. After that, in the year 2015, he was the consultant for HBO Tv series popular as Silicon Valley. In 2016, he joined as a partner at Index ventures. 

Costolo was in the list of Business Insiders’ Silicon Valley’s most impressive CEO. Also, he marked the name in the TIME magazine’s list of Top 10 influential U.S Tech CEO.

Eric Lunt

He was one of the office colleagues of Costolo at Andersen Consulting. Currently, he is CTO at Signal. Eric co-founded SpyOnIt and Feedburner with the Costolo and other two partners. In fact, after the foundation of Feedburner, he served as CTO till Google acquired the company. 

Lunt is a Princeton University graduate.

Steve Olechowski

Steve Olechowski also worked at Andersen Consulting. He contributed to the foundation of Feedburner in 2004. Where he served as COO till 2007. After that, he worked as a project manager with Google on social content syndication. 

As a brilliant tech person, he was always in search of new ideas. As a result, he founded on more companies in 2011 named as Blinkfire Analytics. Also, he is the director at Plug and Plays Chicago.

Matt Shobe

A tech geek, who is brilliant in designing is well familiar as Voice of Feedburner. He is the co-founder of Feedburner, who also worked as a chief designer officer. After Google acquired the FeedBurner, he worked with Google for three years. After that, he joined the BigDoor Media as a chief design officer in 2011.

In 2014, Shobe began his journey at AngelList. He oversees product and user experience. 

Apart from that, Shobe inspires students for entrepreneurship. He sponsors Shobe prize to encourage entrepreneurship. Also, helps to promote start-up businesses with connecting them to popular start-up communities.

Services offered by FeedBurner

The custom RSS feeds and management tools of FeedBurner helped numerous bloggers, podcasters, and other online content publishers. The company provided good control of the website to understand the audience. The basic services provided by Feedburner is traffic analysis. Also, it offers an optional advertising system for publishers. Also, with FeedBurner’s feed, data about subscribers could be easily found. 

We can call it as a typical Web 2.0 service. As it had provided web service APIs allowing much other software to interact with it. 

FeedBurner Acquisition by Google

In 2007, Google bought FeedBurner which was popular for its feed management service. However, rumors said that Google paid a big amount of $100 million. After a month later, Google made MyBrand and TotalStats, the two popular services of FeedBurner free to users.

On 26 May 2011, Google shut down the FeedBurner APIs. After a year, Google retired Adsense of feeds and shut it down shortly. Till 2007, FeedBurner hosted over a million feeds. Around 584,832 publishers used the FeedBurner for blogs as well as for about 142,534 podcast feeds.

Hans Braxmeier and Simon Steinberger started their first web project called pagewizz.com where people can write articles/blogs on different topics with related images. They found that many users put copyrighted images from Google and that’s how they got an idea to launch Pixabay.com to give free images to their users. 

As it was created with the intention of providing quality images to people for their blogs, and other types of content without worrying about the copyrights, it gained popularity rapidly. Also, it provides a great platform for professionals and laypersons to share their work with the community. They get all the deserved praises and recognition from the other users.

Hans Braxmeier is currently living in Switzerland. He studied computer science in Ulm (Germany) and did some web projects initially. He is personally interested in photography and that’s how he made his passion out of it. Hans is also interested in various new technologies. In fact, he is really fascinated with the new cameras being launched nowadays.

Simon Steinberger is Hans’s partner in launching Pixabay.com. He studied chemistry in the same university in which Hans studied (Ulm, Germany) and finished his Ph.D. in 2011. In this span, he started working in the IT sector and developed various websites. Other than this interest, he enjoys rock climbing, mountain biking, and some adventurous fun.

Simon thinks that the best motivation for growing Pixabay day by day is how useful it is getting for users all over the world. His view of photography is quite different than Hans. He believes that photography is a really special art and they get very diversified results in Pixabay. People all over the world put up their images on the site and it amazes him a lot. He is also fascinated by the new generation cameras and their features which help their users create amazing images. 

His main focus is Pixabay but he is also working on some mobile apps for iOS and Android. 

Unlike Hans, Simon has an idol, Mark Zuckerberg. He thinks Mark is passionate about what he is doing than the money he is getting. That’s how Simon sees himself and Hans.

Simon likes the fact that he is free to do whatever he wants with this career choice and that’s what he likes the most about his job.

Early Life

He was born at Pepperell, Massachusetts on 26 July 1832 to the Rosannah Ellen and Willam Emerson. At a young age, he spent most of the time in Pennsylvania. Where he went to Iron City College. Later, he attended the University of Michigan for his graduation in law. William M. Moffatt was his mentor during his law education. After that, he practices and served as a lawyer in Ironton, Missouri.

John as an American War commander

He served for the nation on the battlefield in the 19th Century. John was Volunteer assistance at the Battle of Richmond in 1862. Then he achieved the rank as Colonel and Major. During the last years of service, he served as the war commander of the regiment through the end of the battle.

Later Achievements

After the service in the war, he comes back as a lawyer at Ironton. He also appointed as judge of the 15th Judicial circuit court. John served for the Eastern District, Missouri for the next 4 years. In 1890, he invested the 50000 dollars in an electrical and mechanical start-up of two Scottish persons. These company then named after him as Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company. Later Life

During the last days of life, he became the civil war historian and contributed in writing a history of wars he attended. He rests in peace on 20 June 1899 in Ironton. John W. Career

Ajaypal Banga began his career with Nestle India in 1891. He involved as a management trainee and resided in the company for 13 years. Doing different assignments including sales, marketing, and general management.

After Nestle, he joined PepsiCo’s Restaurants Division. Where he contributed significantly to the launch of Pizza Hut and KFC in India. Due to the lessening of government regulations related to the economy.

His career journey spanned many positions. In 1996, he was the head of marketing in India for the consumer business in Citicorp. In 2000 he served as head of CitiFinancial and the U.S. consumer assets division. In the next two years, in 2002 he became President of a retail bank in North America. Also, he was the head of Citigroup’s international consumer-banking and finance businesses.

In 2008, he moved to Hong Kong. Where he oversees all the bank businesses in Asia including credit cards and consumer banking, alternative investments, etc. He joined MasterCard in the US in 2009. In 2010, he took over as a Mastercard’s CEO.

After joining Mastercard, one of his best clients helped him finding ways to encourage a number of youths to use debit cards. For that, he redesigned the debit card product with a bunch of features. For example, connecting it to the music. After so many trials, he fashioned a creative branding tactic with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This marketing method turned out to be a game-changer.

At that time, the areas of high-tech innovation, altering driving e-commerce, mobile and transit fares were challenging a bit. The other challenge was a group of young people in MasterCard Labs.
