Sean Rad : The Founding Memeber and Former CEO of Tinder

Digitalization has made every activity so convenient for us that we can literally do anything with a swipe of our fingers. Moreover, the younger generation prefers doing everything through the internet, starting from shopping, payment, booking shows, and even, finding a perfect date unless they happen to meet under the mistletoe. Now, how great it would be to use a mobile app where you can find a perfect match only by swiping left or right? Tinder is one such mobile dating app, using which you can chat with other users and find a ‘good match’ for yourself.

The app provides the option to swipe right if you like someone’s profile and the other way around if you don’t like any. The app was launched in 2012, and in less than a couple of months, it grew to a million users. Tinder was founded by Sean Rad, along with Justin Mateen, Jonathan Badeen and many other executive members. Rad was also the former CEO of the company. One of the founding members, Whitney Wolfe, left Tinder after some time to work on another dating app, Bumble.

Early Life

Born into an Iranian family, Rad moved to Los Angeles with his parents in 1970s and settled in Beverly Hills. His parents worked in the technology industry, which might be one reason why he knew tech very well. Since his childhood, Rad was passionate about doing something big in life and making his life worthy.

When Rad was in high school, he did an internship as an entertainment manager, and that’s how he realized that he can make money even from the things he enjoyed doing. Though Rad and Mateen went to different schools, they knew each other since they were fourteen.

Higher Education and Career

Rad started pioneering in the world of technology since he was just eighteen and launched Orgoo, his first startup that was envisioned to build a webmail service. Both Rad and Mateen went to the University of Southern California, but Rad dropped out after a couple of years, to explore the entrepreneurial world and developed a platform called Adly, in the mid-2000s.

These two young entrepreneurs, along with other members, launched Tinder in 2012 and promoted the app heavily in various college campuses. They knew very well, where they could grab the most attention, and thus, gained a billion swipes per day, within a couple of years of Tinder.

Success of Tinder

A year after the release of Tinder, the app received TechCrunch’s Crunchie Award for ‘Best New Startup of 2013’. In March 2013, the company realised the application was used only in a few localities, and hence, Alexa Mateen, social media director, promoted it in other college campuses as well. And by May 2013, Tinder became one of the top twenty-five social networking apps on the basis of users. The frequency of users kept rising, which made Tinder the first online dating app as one of the top five online utilized applications.

In 2014 Webby Awards, the company was named as ‘breakout of the year’, and by October 2014, the application finally incorporated swiping motion and processed more than a billion swipes per day. It made around twelve million matches per day, which is appreciable for a company, which is only two years old. In 2015, the company launched a new feature to let the user access the profiles they rejected earlier, but chatting of two users was only possible when both of them swiped right. Apart from this, a lot of new features were added and deleted from the app in 2015. Tinder’s main complementing site was Facebook, as the user needed to connect their Facebook account with the app for profile verification.

In September 2016, Tinder came in partnership with Vina, a social networking app, and tested ‘Tinder Boost’ in Australia. In October 2016, it went live around the world, which basically, allowed your profile to be on top in your area for 30 minutes. In the same month, Tinder announced the opening of their first office in Silicon Valley, such that to enhance the quality of the employees. In November 2016, the app introduced more freedom on the grounds of choosing gender, breaking the typical mindset of society. This feature raised the number of users by a hefty amount, and by 2018, Tinder had over 3.7 million paid subscribers. The company is now deciding to launch a lighter version of the app, called Tinder Lite, which will take relatively less storage space and consume lesser data.

Majority of the Tinder, today, is under the acquisition of IAC and its subsidiary, Match Group. Till 2018, Rad changed positions quite a number of times, stepping down from the position of CEO and getting back in the helm again. But, in August 2018 a lawsuit was filed against IAC by a group of Tinder employees including Rad. They are suing IAC of alleged stock information and seeking at least $2billion in damages.

Inshorts : An App that Brings to You Crisped News from Around the World

Most of us, especially, the working class of our society, hardly get any time to go through the newspaper every morning. Reading each and every news in details and catching the office bus on time is next to impossible. But, it is like one of the fundamentals of our life to stay updated and follow up with the current news. Majority of the population rely on Google for that, just reading the headlines every day. But, India has brought something better for you.

An Indian company, Inshorts, has created a mobile app that summarizes the news for you in less than sixty words, covering all important highlights of the news. The app includes global news on business, education, politics, sports, technology, and everything you need to know about. The application is available for both Android and iOS.

Inshorts founders

Inshorts was founded in 2013, and within a span of six years, the app received more than 6 million users. The company was founded by Azhar Iqubal, Deepit Purkayastha and Anunay Arunav. All of them dropped out from Indian Institute of Technology to start a business of their own. Azhar Iqubal and his friend, Anunay Arunav, were from IIT Delhi, whereas Purkayastha was from IIT Kharagpur. These three young potential entrepreneurs were pursuing computer science.

History

All of it started with creating a Facebook page on 23rd March 2013. Iqubal created the page to deliver summarized news for the readers. This caught the attention of many social media users, as it helped them stay updated about the whereabouts, without spending too much time in reading the entire stories.

The company, first, released its application in 2013 for Android, and for iOS, in 2015. After Inshorts started gaining popularity, it was admitted to the TLabs startup accelerator (it helps new startups to reach their full potential by proving them with capital and proper mentor). Soon, the company was shortlisted as one of the Nasscom’s 10,100 startups, and by December 2014, the company’s app had 1 lakh subscribers. In the same year, the company received funding from Sachin and Binny Bansal, co-founders of Flipkart. Other early investors, include Gaurav Bhatnagar, Manish Dhingra, Ankush Nijhawan and Times Internet.

In February 2015, the company received funding from Tiger Global, Rebright Partners and raised $4 million in Series A funding, which was followed by raising another $20 million in Series B funding by the Bansal brothers and existing investor Tiger Global. In one of the interviews, Takeshi Ebihara, founder of Rebright Partners, said that Inshorts has a very bright and enthusiastic founding team, which is a pre-requisite for any startups at the initial stage. In the same year, the company was rebranded as Inshorts from its previous name News in Shorts.

The company announced that it intended to hire over a hundred content writers, by the end of 2015. In October 2015, Inshorts acquired a Bangalore-based company, Betaglide, the originator of Retention.ai. Retention.ai is, basically, a technology that helps to track the number of users uninstalling the app, the reason behind it and reducing the maintaining cost for the user. So, this was incorporated in the app of Inshorts to track the number of uninstallation, and thus, make strategies to perk up user retention.

By the end of 2015, the company already started adding images and videos along with the news, and also, added links which directed the user to the entire news if somebody wished to read it. Thus, the company collaborated with many news websites to ensure better news reporting. Though the company raised an appreciable amount of fund and reputation within a couple of years, there was a lot of criticism labelling Inshorts as a startup without a firm strategy. Iqubal, in response to these disparagements, said that they are looking forward to experimenting with the revenue models, and it might take another couple of year for the company to settle with one.

In 2016, the three co-founders got featured in Forbes magazine’s ’30 under 30′ list. They also received the award for ‘Best Innovation App’ by the Internet and Mobile Association of India.

Understanding that India has stepped into the digital era, wrapping it within the cloak of advertisement, it can bring massive profit to the company. So, in July 2016, the company launched the first ad on the platform, which ultimately ended up having more than a hundred advertising partner on board till 2018.

Future Plan of Inshorts

Since digitalized advertisement has become a key to make more profit, the company looks forward to luring more advertisers and increase the net revenue rate by four times. Also, the purchases through the app have increased significantly, and hence it plans to direct the readers to sites, like BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, etc. The company also aims to incorporate more video contents, even for the ads, and put more emphasis on the regional languages. They are planning to curate more Hindi content as a major part of India’s population is still not comfortable with English. So, focusing on languages, apart from English, has produced more room for growth.

Orkut Buyukkokten : Founder of Orkut, One of the First Social Media Network

The power of social networking sites has made our public life more scintillating and invigorating. Updating every single incident occurring in our life and getting to know about other people’s status, all at once, have attracted the audience, especially, the youngsters around the globe. But the history of social media dates back to long before you used a filter on Instagram or even updated the status on Facebook. On 24th January 2004, Orkut Buyukkokten created one of the first social networking websites, Orkut, which was under the acquisition of Google. Buyukkokten is a software engineer who worked at Google and did much more than creating Orkut.

Early life of Buyukkokten

Orkut Buyukkokten was born on 6th February 1975, in Konya, Turkey. After a year of his birth, the family shifted to Germany and came back to Turkey a few years later. Buyukkokten had already adopted a German accent by then and got admitted in the second standard after they moved back to Turkey. Buyukkokten always maintained good grades in school and started coding when he was only in the fourth standard. Büyükkökten, in one of his interviews, said that a bunch of students always bullied him at school.

Higher studies and career

Buyukkokten went to Bilkent University in Ankara, from where he graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering and Information Science. The time he had to go for his master’s, he almost had thought of dropping the idea of applying in Stanford, due to the high application fee. But, he eventually applied and made it to Stanford University.

After completing his M.S, he pursued a PhD degree from Stanford as well. He researched mainly on how to create a better and more efficient way of web browsing based on the devices used by individuals. And during his days in Stanford, while working for his thesis, he created a social network, Club Nexus, in 2001, for the students of Stanford University. The students of the university used the platform for chatting, finding people with similar interests, buying and selling products and many other things. He received a good response from the students, especially the undergraduates, and by opening this platform, he actually enhanced the interaction between the undergraduates and graduates.

Buyukkokten also introduced another social network, inCircle, which was for the Stanford Alumni Association. He wrote the entire code for these networking websites in C#, and as the number of users increased rapidly, he started using different serves to reduce the traffic.

In 2002, When Buyukkokten was in his final year, he eventually, started receiving job offers, and finally, he ended up in Google. Even after he joined Google, he worked hard to develop better social networking sites. He believed in bringing the entire world together on a single platform where people can enjoy, make new friends and socialize. Buyukkokten also launched a company, Affinity Engines, which later, sued both Google and Buyukkokten for trading secrets.

Success of Orkut.com

Since Buyukkokten gave 20% of his time to create a new social networking site, he finally, built one and, named it Eden. And then, after a suggestion by Eric Schmidt and Marissa Mayer, the name was changed to Orkut.com. Google launched Orkut on 22nd January, Buyukkokten being the creator of the platform. Starting it as a 20% project, it turned into a massive success that the company and Büyükkökten, himself, never expected. Though Affinity engines claimed the code of Orkut to be theirs, the lawsuit they filed against Google and Buyukkokten was settled in 2006. A lot of new features were added once the website went live. A logo was resigned in 25th August 2007, followed by second redesigning in 27th October 2009.

As the number of people making profiles in Orkut increased, Buyukkokten declared that it will also be released in 6 different languages (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu). Orkut was launched worldwide and gained the most popularity in Estonia, Brazil and India. Buyukkokten decided to leave the team of Orkut.com in 2008 and started working as a product manager at Google.

In 30th June 2014, Google announced that it will be closing Orkut.com by 30th September 2014. But for the time span it existed, Orkut changed the face of social media by giving the common people a real experience of communicating virtually and socializing.

Hello

Buyukkokten launched another social networking site Hello, in 2016, which is having users from all over the world, and he, still, thrive to make the world a better place by connecting people through technology.

Personal life

His parent’s names are still unknown to most of the world. He was in an openly gay relationship, and eventually, married to Derek Holbrook. But later, they got separated. He has two children.

James Edward Allchin: An Epitome of Talent and Intellect

Music and software, does not go along, right? And will it be believable, if we say, one of the most prominent software engineers in the world, James Edward Allchin, is also known for his awesome music compositions. Though he was always into music, Allchin had never thought that he will be one of the key members working on the most famous software inventions of the world, and one day, Microsoft will roam behind him to hire him. Most of our passions get suppressed under the sheer need of sustenance and livelihood, but it was Allchin’s passion and efforts that made him work through all the difficulties.

Early life

Jim Allchin was born in 1951 in Grand Rapids, Michigan but soon the family shifted to Keysville, Florida. He was definitely not from a financially predominant family, and his parents worked on a farm. They lived in a small house with a tin roof, far from the city and surrounded by only farmlands and phosphate mines. They didn’t even have enough money to paint the walls. Due to the poor financial condition, Allchin and his older brother started working on the farm from an early age. They often had to miss school to collect strawberries, okra etc. for supporting the family for daily needs.

Allchin grew interested in music when he was a kid and kept delving deeper into the musical world until he created his own euphony. The first musical instrument he got was a trumpet when he was a teenager, and later, he saved money to buy an acoustic guitar. Allchin drew inspiration for playing the instruments, mainly, from the Blues, Latin players, and the other popular players of his time. He played at many studios and travelled with bands to different places. He started writing songs, and at times, he played for more than sixteen hours a day. And, through this entire short-term journey, he came across great musicians and learnt that ‘both, hard work and luck, matter to achieve success’. After leading a vagabond life for a few months, he resumed his schooling, but to keep in touch with music, he gave music lessons at a junior college.

Since none of his parents got the opportunity to go to school, they wanted both their sons to graduate. Initially, Allchin wasn’t much interested in schooling and spent most of his time practising the guitar, but he had a special niche for mathematics. Life started changing when he finally pursued Electrical Engineering at the University of Florida, but he dropped out to play in more bands. But, he somehow managed to graduate in the year 1973, with a BS in Computer Science, from the university.

Higher studies and career

Soon after graduating, Allchin joined Texas Instruments, where he helped building operating systems. After this, he helped out a former lecturer to open his own company, and then, he took another job in Dallas, Texas. After a few years, he decided to complete his Masters from Stanford University, and that’s where his life took a new turn.

Allchin was completely engrossed in computer science and discrete mathematics and graduated with a degree of MS in Computer science in 1980. But this was not the end. The teenage boy, who once dropped out to pursue music, ended up pursuing PhD at Georgia Institute of Technology. He was highly interested in programming, especially, the object-oriented operating system and did his research related to it. He, finally, published his thesis, ‘An Architecture for Reliable Decentralized Systems’.

After receiving his PhD, Allchin started working for Banyan in 1983 and continued for seven years. He got rapid promotions, and soon, he became the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the company. He created some astounding operating systems there, which included the StreetTalk directory protocol.

Bill Gates literally required one long year to convince this computer pundit to join Microsoft, and finally, succeeded to hire him in 1990.

Allchin and Microsoft

Allchin was an expert in creating networks, software and debugging systems. He was initially given the duty of rebuilding LAN Manager, but later, he decided that it needed a fresh start. He received his first conspicuous project, Cairo, in 1991, when Bill Gates decided to add more advanced software to Windows NT and create the next version of the operating system. In July 1992, Allchin gave a presentation about the next generation of Microsoft operating system at the NT Developer Conference. One of the main goals of Cairo was to make the files easily accessible to the users. It was released in an array of successive operating systems.

After that Allchin created new server organization and mainly focused on the business market which provoked the ire of Vice President Brad Silverberg, who aimed at developing personal computer market. In 1999, the company restructured itself, and a single operating system division was formed. Allchin became the Vice President of this new group. After he came into power, the business expanded with an increasing number of clients. His biggest success was creating the company’s server business from scratch, which is majorly responsible for its huge success.

In 2002, Allchin was diagnosed with cancer. So, he took a leave of absence. Though he was fully recovered by 2003, he didn’t plan to stay in Microsoft for long. He retired from Microsoft at the end of 2006.

Musical Career

After he left Microsoft, he devoted pretty much of his time to music and performing charity. His first album, Enigma was released in 2009 followed by Overclocked in 2011. A few more albums were released after this and were also featured in iTunes.

He is a true inspiration for all of us. He came from nothing and established himself both as a prominent programmer, and a devoted musician. He still continues to learn, write songs and definitely code!

Rolls-Royce : Success Story Of A Motor Car Brand That Over a Century Old

Rolls-Royce, a renowned motor car company, established in 1904, has been through many phases of accomplishments both alone and in a joint venture with other superior automobile companies around the world.

The two masterminds behind this colossal empire, Henry Royce and Charles Rolls met each other in May 1994, after Royce built his first motor car. With the partnership of a majestic car designer and an aviation pioneer, the company started producing the best cars world has ever witnessed.

Henry Royce

Sir Frederick Henry Royce was born in Alwalton, Huntingdonshire on 27 March 1863. He was an engineer and a car designer by occupation. Since his father died, when he was very young, there was always a financial crisis in the family. But luckily, Royce along with Ernest Claremont started a business of electric fittings, in 1884 with some of their savings. And, by the next decade, the company started building dynamos and electric cranes, when the idea of motor car company struck Royce’s mind. He was so fixated on the idea that he built his own motor car in 1904, which eventually, led to the meeting between him and Rolls.

Charles Rolls

Charles Stewart Rolls was born in Berkeley Square, London on 27 August 1877. He was a motor car promoter and an aviator by occupation. Since a very young age, Charles was interested in developing engines, so he studied mechanical and applied science from Trinity College. Apart from engineering, he had the skills of a true businessman. In January 1903, he established one of Britain’s first car dealership, his father being the capital investor. Engaging himself into the business world resulted at the beginning of an era when he co-founded Rolls-Royce.

History of Rolls-Royce

The beginning of the tale dates back to 4th May 1904, when these two men met at the Midland Hotel, Manchester, through Henry Edmunds, a friend of Charles Rolls. In 23rd December 1904, both of them settled to an agreement and decided the trading name of their company, i.e. Rolls-Royce. In the same month, the first car of Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce 10 hp, was launched at the Paris Salon. In March 1906, Rolls-Royce Limited was formed with Royce as the chief engineer and works director, while Rolls managed the financial section of the business. In the same year, the six-cylinder Silver Ghost was released, which then, gained immense popularity and was known as ‘the best car in the world’. By 1907, the company started receiving awards for the exquisite design engineering that increased the reliability of the cars. The partnership ended with the death of Rolls in 1910.

In the year 1914, in response to the First World War, Royce started designing aero engines. And the first aero engine- Eagle. It was the first engine that motorized the first flight from England to Australia. In October 1928, Royce started designing the ‘R’ engine, and within a span of one year, the ‘R’ engine set a new record of airspeed (357.7 miles per hour). This led to the winning of Schneider Trophy in 1929. In 1931, the ‘R’ engine established a new world record of speed 400 miles per hour. In 1933, Royce launched PV-12, and the first test of this engine was completed in 1934, one year after Royce died. And this engine was known as the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.

During the Second World War, the company got transformed into a huge aeronautical tycoon, because of the rising demand for the Merlin. In the year 1944, under the supervision of Sir Frank Whittle, the development of the aero gas turbine began. It had a good technological lead. In 1953, the company entered the civil aviation market with the Dart in the Vickers Viscount. This was a strategy to finally gain the acceptance for gas turbines by the aeronautical industry.

In 1960, the company launched RB211 (three shafts high-bypass turbofan engine). By 1961, many small companies came under the acquisition of Rolls-Royce, and in 1966, the company merged with Bristol Siddeley. By 1987, it became the only company in Britain to power engines in air, land, and even, in the sea. In 1990, the company formed a joint venture with BMW of Germany.

In 1995, acquisition of Allison Engine Company in Indianapolis led to many successful defence programs. By the end of the 1990s, the company globally dominated the marine power systems, and by the end of an entire century, BMW took the responsibility of the Rolls-Royce cars.

In 2005, the company opened its 6,000 square meter Marine facility in Shanghai. In 2006, the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 ran for the first time. Many more engines were developed in the next few years, which served airways all over the world. In May 2011, the company received a contract for building nuclear-powered submarines by the UK government.

Currently, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (BMW Subsidiary) has its headquarters in Goodwood, West Sussex with more than 1300 employees beating its own sales record every year. The other sections of this gigantic industry are also carrying out projects with their magnificent technologies to create a better tomorrow.
