Elon Musk’s X Struggles with User Growth as the rise of Meta Threads

Since Elon Musk's $44 billion purchase in mid-2022, the growth of daily active users on X has significantly slowed.

In 2024, the daily increase dropped to less than 2%, a stark decline from the 30% annual growth seen in 2020.

The total number of daily active users is now approximately 251 million.

Data from AppFigures shows that while Meta’s Threads has been achieving 250,000 to 300,000 daily iOS downloads, X’s daily downloads have stagnated around 100,000.

Threads accumulated 51 million iOS downloads, more than doubling X’s 20 million. On Android, Threads garnered 87 million downloads compared to X’s 45 million.

Despite slower app download rates, X still leads in web traffic with over 2 billion monthly visitors compared to Threads’ 51.5 million, as per SimilarWeb data.

Threads reports having 175 million active users monthly, while daily active users stand at about 38 million according to Sensor Tower.

This suggests that X may have a more engaged user base, with individuals potentially interacting more frequently on the platform.

Despite maintaining substantial web traffic, X faces significant challenges with declining user growth and app download rates, contrasting sharply with Threads' rapid expansion and increasing popularity.
